LSC had analog gauges. The sending unit for the lsc's were unique and are not made by anybody. There is a company that can rebuild them though .\r\nThe trip minders which have the clock and other functions have a habit of going bad due to leaking capacitors over time. Once again there is a gentleman who can rebuild them out there.\r\nThe engine is a basic 5.0 ho. Easy to repair. The tranny is a basic aod. Once again easy to find parts.\r\nA big thing that should be checked is the ignition switch and harness. These were issued a bulletin due to fires.\r\nAir bags for the suspension are readily available although the leveling sensors are not.\r\nGreat cars overall.\r\nHow do I know all this? I bought it mostly because it was inexpensive and rust free (originally from Arizona) but have grown to really like the car. The biggest issue is parts availability. Though it's a foxbody platform and you can still get any part you'd like for a foxbody Mustang, the Mark VII shares very few parts with the Mustang outside of the drivetrain. Ford was bad about obsoleting parts as soon as legally possible on lower volume performance models like the Mark VII, Merkur XR4Ti, Thunderbird SC, Taurus SHO, Thunderbird Turbo Coupe and even the Mustang SVO. All the unique parts were obsoleted decades ago so you're left with trying to source good used parts or find some sort of a work around. Parts for the Teves II anti-lock braking system are no longer available (NLA) and even the calipers (shared with the Mustang SVO and Thunderbird Turbo Coupe) are in short supply. Also NLA are the air bags with the LSC specific spring rate. Only generic soft spring rate bags meant for the Bill Blass edition are available. Likewise, no high performance shocks and struts are available (Mark VII's have longer control arms and suspension travel compared to Mustangs so those parts aren't a direct fit). For these reasons, it's fairly common to ditch the air ride and anti-lock brakes in favor of SN95 Mustang front spindles, rotors, calipers and control arms (requires 17\"+ wheels). Mine has Eibach coil springs and larger sway bars (Mustang front and Addco rear). Worn inner tie rods will cause the car to follow ruts in the road. Be careful when replacing the 15:1 ratio steering rack with a rebuilt unit as you may get one back that doesn't have the higher feel valving used by the LSC. The SN95 racks are an upgrade with the 2033-2004 Cobra version being the best (requires a swap shaft). While there are no good performance tires left in the OE 225/60/15 size for the foxbody Mustangs, I was pleased to find there are some V-rated choices in the 225/60/16 Mark VII size which is shared with the Crown Vic police interceptor so tires like the Goodyear Eagle RSA and General G-Max Justice high performance all seasons are still available. I'm eyeing the Sumitomo HTR A/S P03 Ultra High Performance All-Season tires in the same size for my Thunderbird SC which will need tires next year. Some parts of the transmission mount are NLA. The plastic cooling fan blades are prone to cracking at the hub and the Lincoln specific fan is NLA. Though they are different, there are replacements made for Mustangs that can be used but some owners take the opportunity to swap in electric fans. The voltage regulator in the alternators are also prone to failure but there are kits for the popular 3G alternator upgrade. The grease that conducts heat from the TFI (ignition) module to the aluminum distributor body will eventually dry out causing the module to overheat and fail. It's best to preemptively relocate the TFI module to a heat sink mounted on the firewall. The LSC seats are fantastic but replacement electric motors (magnets lose their bond to the motor case) are NLA. The side bolsters on the seats wear quickly unless you take care getting in and out of the car and the leather seats can crack and tear unless properly taken care of. Dashes are also prone to cracking. Window motors and door locks will eventually need replacement. HVAC controls and trip computers can fail but there is a guy who rebuilds those. One of the most serious part failure is the nylon throttle valve bushing. If it fails, it can destroy the transmission in just a few miles. Luckily, there are bronze replacement bushings which will stand the test of time. The head lamps are prone to yellowing and, along with the Marchal fog lights, are NLA. Also, the plastic exterior trim sun fades. This 1989 has the speed density 5.0L HO with forged pistons, low tension metric rings and hydraulic roller cam. It's a very reliable engine though the gaskets are 34 years old. Mine is leaking coolant at the front cover. The valve stem seals are umbrella style and can harden and break, falling into the oil pan. If they get sucked up by the oil pump, it can lock the gears and twist the oil pump drive shaft. I plan to pull my engine to replace gaskets and install some higher performance parts.
