It is beautiful to look at, very comfortable and a hoot to drive. The handling is actually very good - chassis and suspension were engineered by Lotus, and it shares a lot in common with the Esprit. I also own an Esprit - the driving experience is similar, although you can feel the rear weight bias in the DeLorean vs the better balance from the mid-engine placement in the Lotus. DMC lowering springs improve the handling and stance. The DeLorean has proven to be a reliable car, and easy to fix when needed. Parts are readily available, and the owner community is robust. You can improve the power considerably with a Stage 2 upgrade from DMC - mine has gone through this process. Hotter cams, ported heads, stainless headers/exhaust. Makes about 200 hp - just what the \u201cDoc\u201d ordered. The best part about driving it is arriving in it. People just love this car. I have made many friends and had countless great conversations at C&C events, gas stations and everywhere else I go. I have had countless people sit in it and take pictures of it. The smiles on a kid\u2019s & Dad\u2019s face when they sit in it and Dad takes a few pics of Junior grinning at the wheel are worth every penny. I often joke that although my car has only 11k miles on it, the driver\u2019s seat has 50k on it! No other car is so universally loved and recognized. So only choice was to carry the flat in the passenger seat. The luggage rack was a dealer option and they are somewhat rare. I took care of all the necessary mechanicals and eletricals when I got it, lowered it, and then redid the interior in leather and put modern stereo with bluetooth etc. It wasn't fast, but it didn't need to be. It was completely reliable once you replace the fuel pump. Never overheated in LA traffic, although in the middle of summer it could get warm if you were in it for too long. Nothing gets more looks on the road, period -- not Ferraris, Lambos, McLarens, nothing. If you do not like attention or talking to random people about your car, do not get one of these! There is a great community for information as well. \r\n\r\nIf you want to have fun, pretend to not know anything about the movie... it will drive people crazy. We were quite clear with Dave that it was one of the last one or two that we had made in the 80s/90s. Regardless, it's an unusual aftermarket part - I'm not sure I'd try to tow much more than jetski with it. As I recall, ours were originally made so a client of ours could put their bike rack on the back. Took him a while to figure out why his bike tires were always flat - the rack he had mounted on the hitch lined up the bike tires up perfectly with the exhaust. I don't recall now if he got a new rack or if the hitch design was modified.\n\nThe luggage racks were originally developed by DMC in the USA in late 80/early 81 when they started to get pre-production cars in for US-testing and evaluation and discovered a flat rear tire wouldn't fit in the spare wheel well. With the luggage rack, that way you could put the flat rear tire/wheel on it rather than passenger seat (or their lap!). Ingenious design that even when fully loaded, it doesn't obstruct rear visibility at all. FWIW, factory records held by the DeLorean Museum indicate that only 1,000 luggage racks were ordered by DMC and only 150-200 of the ski rack adapters.\n\nWhy didn't they factory just change the size of the wheel well? By the time it was discovered, the factory had already finished the production of the 13 sets of mold that were used to produce the fiberglass underbodies. No way to modify all the molds without either shutting down or significantly slowing production as they were running them on three shifts to keep up with two shifts of assembly. Couldn't very well rotate them in and of production to modify them and have some cars that you could fit the flat and not another. Each mold had a life of about 3,000 pieces, and as they all came on at the same time, the plan was to modify the replacements. Takes a lot of skill because of the backbone frame design. Guys have put Buick 4.3 turbos in them and there was even an LT5 transplant a few years back. Thought putting that big V8 back there would take an already ass-heavy car and make it tought to control in the curves. But what do I know. \r\n\r\nDeLoreans arent about accelerating fast. Gotta pull away slow so everyone can see you. I have had dozens of classic/exotic cars over the years and there has never been anything that attracts attention or elicits smiles like the DeLorean. The late owner seemed heavily involved in the Midwest DMC club and it can be seen in many St. Patrick's Day parade videos in Chicago and in the Club's gallery on FB. Just this past August, this car was used in a school's promotional video about teaching kids for the future.
