The 35/36 Phaeton is the favorite tour car among ACD Club members - a Convertible that comfortably holds 4 people, huge trunk for a 1930's car, Auburn's \"modern\" car with all steel body construction, can keep up in traffic and 65 mph capable on highway, and .... The non-Supercharged cars are preferable for people who like to tour without a trailer (Supercharged cars with pipes are neat and all, though the cars successfully touring are few and generally have an Engineer as an owner - they are a lot of extra engine parts, fussy, and ...). The bulk of the Phaetons have been restored at some point in time with a very small handful left unrestored (and some of those are piles of parts). There are about 125 Boattails, 125 Cabriolets, 10 Coupes (the number would be higher if so many Coupes were had not been converted to Cabriolets over time), maybe 15 Sedans (the number would be higher if not having been used as parts cars), perhaps 3 Broughams /Coaches (unsure why here), and a couple coachbuilt cars (super rare when new and still are). \n\nI see a lot of notes about Certification - my opinion is that Certification is mostly a Boattail thing (someone going for some serious 500K plus money) or someone with a Duesenberg. Otherwise, Certification is something fun to do because you are at a Club meet (it says you have what you have is correct as built). I have never know the car to be on a trailer for any reason (including the year he drove it back home without a starter as he loaned it out to get someone else home). We have a diverse membership in age in our local british car club albeit the difference is that the people are so scattered among their interests while in ACD there is a fairly narrow defined focus. Most ACD members also have more than one ACD product - they really are fabulous cars albeit a Cord can be a challenge. The nice thing about an Auburn is that they are pretty straight forward and they \u201cgo\u201d on the road - good looks too. The 34-36 cars tend to \u201cgo\u201d as they are nice horsepower, nice gearing, in an effort to streamline production and cost they cut weight out of the car to allow nice handling, nice engineering, and \u2026. - they pretty much built the ideal prewar car. A well sorted Cord 810/812 is probably the finest driving experience pre-say 1953, albeit there are not that many well sorted Cords on any one given day on a calendar - and an Auburn falls into the category as the second choice for pre-1953 drivability (or is it technically the first choice given it is a straight forward car). Sidenote: Cords are incredibly popular via their looks and engineering does have its fan club too via being \u201cadvanced\u201d. The production numbers of Auburn have allowed parts reproduction and the boattail and convertible prices have equally allowed.\n\nUpon buying the Auburn Sedan in 2006, we cleaned out the garage of all the other pain in the \u2026 cars. That sedan is now owned by a previous ACD Club President (they bought it to have a dependable car while they were restoring their Boattail and v-12).\n\nAs a sidenote: When I joined CCCA, I was the youngest member in 1988 (I had been attending meets for years prior though). At that time I was in my 20\u2019s and it was the 40 under 40, then is became the 40 under 50, and now it is the 40 under 60. Anyway, I will always be a CCCA member - great group of people, fabulous magazine, and \u2026. My point is that ACD is a very different diverse age demographic (almost like the European car clubs being so much more age diverse). \n\nI am one of the few people that put up and down their 34-36 Phaeton convertible top. It takes about 10-15 minutes and two people. You get better in time if you have a husband and wife (or child) team on the same page and get the system down. Going up is about a 5 minute task - rain helps the motivation. I usually put it down in the spring and do not go up until needed. If you drive on the highway with all 4 windows up and the center pillars in it is quite comfortable. At ACD festival I would say 50/50mix of top up and top down. With my last top being about 10k, I probably will not be as excited about folding it up and down (anyway, I did go ahead and spend another 1k on a boot and it has been up and down several times in the upholstery shop).\n\nWhen the current ACD Club President bought their 1935 Phaeton, the first thing we did was put the top down for ACD Festival Parade.
