As the first vehicle officially called an SUV, the first Cherokees have been hiding under the radar for a surprisingly long time now. The wide body optioned ones that started in \u201876 seem to be the ones that are more remembered, but even then, I find it puzzling that so many people believe the XJ was the first Cherokee. Even among Jeep enthusiasts. Strangely, the original narrow track SJ\u2019s are largely unknown even though they were extremely popular when new. When equipped with Quadratrac, which earned a great reputation for bad weather driving, (a transfer case that was also very popular with the off-road racing community, which proved it could take abuse) these trucks were a huge hit. This really was the genesis of today\u2019s family oriented AWD SUV\u2019s that are virtually everywhere. Unfortunately, quadratrac also was unfairly dubbed as a troublesome transfer case because many people ran the wrong fluid. Also, for some time, replacement chains were prone to breaking. Combine that with 1970\u2019s malaise-era performance and single digit gas-mileage, plus the second oil embargo, and a fair number ended up parked outside rotting away. Combine this with the most common failure point, the optional electric rear window, which must be lowered to open the tailgate, most ended up having totally battered interiors and rusted rear floors. Funny enough, these had fewer quarter panel rust problems than the wide-trac ones did, but still just as problematic as the Wagoneers. All Full Size Jeeps, Wagoneers, Trucks and Cherokees were prone to water collecting under the front carpets which rot the floors there as well. All this unfortunately added up to SJ Cherokees being nearly valueless for well over two decades. As a result, narrow-trac Cherokees in this condition are pretty darn rare. This one looks like a pretty nice example of what is now a seldom seen, and historically significant truck. For people that decide Wagoneer prices are getting out of reach, they might discover these are a great alternative since these are essentially the same vehicle with two fewer doors and a slightly more spartan interior. But they drive exactly the same! I can say that because I\u2019ve owned several of both. And if you have never driven one, you\u2019d probably be surprised to find how pleasant they are to drive (unless someone installs lift springs which tend to be pretty stiff). I believe this could be a pretty sound under-the-radar investment once the classic market turns around again. As a bonus, they are stone simple to work on and relatively easy to get parts for. They are individual bucket seats with a center armrest that, in a pinch, could be used as a seat. I\u2019m pointing this out for two reasons. Only the passenger side could be folded over to access the back seat, and bucket seats were considered more appealing to youthful buyers in the 1970\u2019s. That is significant because the Cherokee was specifically created to appeal to young buyers who wanted a more \u201csporty\u201d Wagoneer (remember KEY word in Sport Utility Vehichles) version of the Wagoneer.
