BaT staff did a great job capturing all the details I provided. I\u2019ll do my best to answer questions, but the reality is I never had the opportunity to speak with the original owner, so some details will be inevitably lost to history. \r\n\r\nWhat I do know:\r\nThis car was the owners pride and joy, one of three vehicles that he meticulously maintained as evidenced by the hand-written service log he kept which is included with the sale. It was garaged it\u2019s whole life until I bought it, and the condition of the trim, window seals etc. are excellent. It is in exceptional condition inside and out, like a time capsule from 1986. It was regularly driven and maintained it\u2019s whole life, and clearly well taken care of.\r\n\r\nAlthough recently the original owner could not drive due to disability, the car was driven occasionally until his passing by his caretaker in order to get him to his doctor\u2019s appointments. I drove the car to my home as-is, 16 miles, on the highway and on local roads. It truly is amazing how well the car drives. It\u2019s straight, smooth at highway speeds, and I wouldn\u2019t hesitate to drive the car anywhere.\r\n\r\nOne thing that immediately stood out to me about this car is the absence of rot. I grew up riding in my parent\u2019s 1989 Volvo 240DL sedan, which they purchased new and always cared for, yet it still succumbed to the copious amounts of salt laid down on our New York roads in winter. This car was clearly not driven in winter. As you can see, hardware and exhaust parts do appear to have some corrosion, as would be reasonably expected for any car with 100k miles. The condition of the wheel wells, strut towers and rockers, all typical rust-prone areas, are pictured and look great. \r\n\r\nAs noted, the driver side power seat switch is inoperable, but the seat is manually adjustable with the provided factory tool, pictured. \r\n\r\nYou may notice that the trim piece surrounding the ignition switch in picture no. 106 is missing/broken. I was able to order a replacement original Volvo factory trim piece online at http://www.volvowholesalepartsdirect.com/ which has arrived from Sweden promptly and will be included. I was pleasantly surprised to learn factory parts for this car are available, affordable and easily attainable online. \r\n\r\nI am not a dealer or a \u201cflipper\u201d looking to make a quick buck at anyone\u2019s expense. I will answer whatever I can honestly and transparently. I was thoroughly impressed with the overall condition of this car when I saw it, and thought an enthusiast might enjoy it. That\u2019s why it\u2019s listed here, with no reserve. I\u2019m content with letting the market determine the sale price and just hope this is a fun experience! It was this color, with red leather and a 4 speed manual with electric overdrive. The rear badging was different: in cursive rather than block lettering. It read \"760 turbo intercooler.\" The 760 meant it was the upscale version of the 700 series. The turbo intercooler meant it had the 2.3 4 cylinder with a turbo and intercooler. It was a great road car. I recall that the dealership where I leased it had another manual 760 turbo in stock. It was chestnut brown with a tan cloth interior. I heard that it sat forever in the showroom and eventually the dealer wholesaled it because no one wanted a stick or cloth. My car also got great gas mileage. Before I leased it the dealer let me take a 75 mile test drive to check fuel economy. It returned 28.75 mpg. Everyone there was amazed! EPA rating was only 22. Seemed everyone with the 760 model, 4 cylinder or V6 (which was the 760 GLE) had trouble with the automatic climate control. Mine worked fine, but had trouble with the sunroof not working right, needing to be restarted several times from a cold start before it would idle, I often couldn't get it into first gear unless I shut off the engine, and the transmission case cracked open with a loud bang one day. That was replaced under warranty, but the other items persisted and I became frustrated and turned the car in. I remember that the ride, handling and performance were exceptional. 700 Volvo's were everywhere in the 80s but you hardly see then anymore. One minor addition: it's true that Volvo never turbocharged the V6 for production, but development versions of the 780 (coupe) did have some experimental turbocharged versions of the late-style, even fire, electronically injected PRV engine. To my recollection they would have been slightly debored (2.5L or 2.6L IIRC), can't remember if they were testing them with single or twin turbos. They ultimately abandoned the project for production use allegedly due to difficulty of managing underhood heat. Ultimately they positioned V6 as a more relaxed naturally aspirated powerplant with moderate power and an emphasis on low NVH, and fell back on the old turbo 4-cylinder as the performance option in those. Fun to imagine how the turbo V6 would have been if it had made it to market -- no doubt smooth and fast and a good match for the very well set up 7/900 chassis, which is well suited to large amounts of power. I put a Ford 5.0L into an '89 745 almost 20 years ago and even with 300+ lb-ft going to the rear axle, this platform is stable and refined. The original live rear axle models (like this one) have a unique rear suspension design with trailing arms and torque rods mounted to a special subframe, much celebrated when it was first introduced. Better than almost any other system out there for combining tight axle motion control with refined operation. Great ride quality and noise abatement, yet really hard to get the axle hopping in these cars, even on bad pavement. Later models with IRS are even smoother, but only by a little bit, since the solid axle cars are so good; and the IRS is much more maintenance-intensive with a greater number of bushings, CV axles, etc.\r\n\r\nWhen the 760 was first introduced here for '83, the middle \"6\" digit was fully accurate for that one year only; the only original engine options were the 2.8L B28F PRV odd-fire V6 or the 2.4L D24T inline six diesel, no 4-cylinders. The diesel could only have a manual trans, gas V6 was automatic only. '84 was the first year the 760 had a 4-cylinder option as well, the one year only B23FT, older style architecture with thicker rods and block mounted distributor. '85 still had all three options (V6/turbodiesel/turbo gas 4cyl) but this was the first year for the new B230FT, head mounted distributor with shorter pistons and lighter, thinner rods. For '84 and '85 the turbo gas 760s could have manual transmissions, though they are very rare. Turbodiesel 760s had manual trans only for '83, could have manual or ZF automatic for '84, and were automatic only for '85, though the '85 740 TD could still have a manual. Confused? '85 was also the first year for the 740 series and the first year for both 740 and 760 wagons. Too many permutations and Volvo knew it.\r\n\r\n'86, the year of this car, things became much simpler, diesel option disappeared for the 760, manual trans went away for all 760 models. 760 in this model year onward was only available as the 760 GLE sedan (with V6), 760 Turbo sedan, or 760 Turbo wagon. Those were the options they kept for the rest of the model run, with some updates (new B280F V6 in 87, body and interior redesign and IRS in 88). Wagons never got the V6 but it was available in sedans all the way until '90.\r\n\r\nThis is the most popular version of the 760 series, turbo, sedan, automatic. The V6 cars exist in much smaller numbers than the 760 Turbo models like this one, contrary to what someone thought below. These are terrific cars all around, fast and refined and very robust, and exceptionally comfortable for long distance travel. The auto climate control systems are generally trouble-free, don't be afraid of it. A/C is very powerful in these unlike the 240 series and they run fine with a R134a conversion. Most of the 700 series HVAC is GM parts so if something does fail it's easy to troubleshoot and find replacements. \r\n\r\nEngine wiring harnesses can fail on any Volvo through 1987 but Dave Barton sells quality new-production replacements at a good price; buyer of this car would be well advised to buy one now and keep it as insurance even if they don't install it until they start seeing trouble with the original. Many cars had wiring harnesses changed at the dealer, sometimes even under warranty, so it might also already have an updated harness. This mid-80s era of the B230FT is considered the least desirable by the high performance crowd because the early low friction pistons and 9mm rods don't survive with big turbos, but if kept at or near stock power level as this car should be and given normal care, they hold up just as well as the rest of the series, in other words more or less indefinitely.\r\n\r\nIt's fun to see these models finally getting some recognition. One minor addition: it's true that Volvo never turbocharged the V6 for production, but development versions of the 780 (coupe) did have some experimental turbocharged versions of the late-style, even fire, electronically injected PRV engine. To my recollection they would have been slightly debored (2.5L or 2.6L IIRC), can't remember if they were testing them with single or twin turbos. They ultimately abandoned the project for production use allegedly due to difficulty of managing underhood heat. Ultimately they positioned V6 as a more relaxed naturally aspirated powerplant with moderate power and an emphasis on low NVH, and fell back on the old turbo 4-cylinder as the performance option in those. Fun to imagine how the turbo V6 would have been if it had made it to market -- no doubt smooth and fast and a good match for the very well set up 7/900 chassis, which is well suited to large amounts of power. I put a Ford 5.0L into an '89 745 almost 20 years ago and even with 300+ lb-ft going to the rear axle, this platform is stable and refined. The original live rear axle models (like this one) have a unique rear suspension design with trailing arms and torque rods mounted to a special subframe, much celebrated when it was first introduced. Better than almost any other system out there for combining successful axle motion control with refined operation. Great ride quality and noise abatement, yet really hard to get the axle hopping in these cars, even on bad pavement. Later models with IRS are even smoother, but only by a little bit, since the solid axle cars are so good; and the IRS is much more maintenance-intensive with a greater number of bushings, CV axles, etc.\r\n\r\nWhen the 760 was first introduced here for '83, the middle \"6\" digit was fully accurate for that one year only; the only original engine options were the 2.8L B28F PRV odd-fire V6 or the 2.4L D24T inline six diesel, no 4-cylinders. The diesel could only have a manual trans, gas V6 was automatic only. '84 was the first year the 760 had a 4-cylinder option as well, the one year only B23FT, older style architecture with thicker rods and block mounted distributor. '85 still had all three options (V6/turbodiesel/turbo gas 4cyl) but this was the first year for the new B230FT, head mounted distributor with shorter pistons and lighter, thinner rods. For '84 and '85 the turbo gas 760s could have manual transmissions, though they are very rare. Turbodiesel 760s had manual trans only for '83, could have manual or ZF automatic for '84, and were automatic only for '85, though the '85 740 TD could still have a manual. Confused? '85 was also the first year for the 740 series and the first year for both 740 and 760 wagons. Too many permutations and Volvo knew it.\r\n\r\n'86, the year of this car, things became much simpler, diesel option disappeared for the 760, manual trans went away for all 760 models. 760 in this model year onward was only available as the 760 GLE sedan (with V6), 760 Turbo sedan, or 760 Turbo wagon. Those were the options they kept for the rest of the model run, with some updates (new B280F V6 in 87, body and interior redesign and IRS in 88). Wagons never got the V6 but it was available in sedans all the way until '90.\r\n\r\nThis is the most popular version of the 760 series, turbo, sedan, automatic. The V6 cars exist in much smaller numbers than the 760 Turbo models like this one, contrary to what someone thought below. These are terrific cars all around, fast and refined and very robust, and exceptionally comfortable for long distance travel. The auto climate control systems are generally trouble-free, don't be afraid of it. A/C is very powerful in these unlike the 240 series and they run fine with a R134a conversion. Most of the 700 series HVAC is GM parts so if something does fail it's easy to troubleshoot and find replacements. \r\n\r\nEngine wiring harnesses can fail on any Volvo through 1987 but Dave Barton sells quality new-production replacements at a good price; buyer of this car would be well advised to buy one now and keep it as insurance even if they don't install it until they start seeing trouble with the original. Many cars had wiring harnesses changed at the dealer, sometimes even under warranty, so it might also already have an updated harness. This mid-80s era of the B230FT is considered the least desirable by the high performance crowd because the early low friction pistons and 9mm rods don't survive with big turbos, but if kept at or near stock power level as this car should be and given normal care, they hold up just as well as the rest of the series, in other words more or less indefinitely.\r\n\r\nIt's fun to see these models finally getting some recognition. I used to ride my bicycle for exercise near this dealership and I realized I had seen it on the lot for quite a while. It was a Toyota and Volvo dealer, and used car sales was in this manufactuerd building to one side. When I test drove it there were cigarette butts in the ashtray. So I decideded they weren't successfully selling it and someone there was driving it to and from work. So I lowballed them at 14,250. \n\nThis was kind of funny. They sat me in this room, the sales guy then left to talk to the boss manager. I had brought a book, expecting delays, which there were. What was funny was that I could hear the conversation. Sales guy would go into the manager's office and they would talk sports for 10 minutes which I overheard through the cheap ventilation ducts. Then he would say my offer. The manager said, ask for $16,000 or something. Then he came back, apologetically reported the new price, and I responded $14,650. He goes back and talks sports a while, then comes back and offers something again. We settled on $14,750. I was never intimidated buying a car again, I always had good memories to draw on and now I enjoy the process.\n\nWhen I sold this, I bought one I immediately hated, a 1999 Toyota Solara. The 240 was a bulletproof car. Particularly the mid-late 70's versions. I had a 1978 242 DL that went over 350K miles, then I sold it to a friend for $500 and he drove it for years. Something crazy like 14 coats of paint from the factory.\r\n2. I had a 1979 Volvo 265. PRV (Peugeot, Renault, Volvo) motor that was junk. The car was great, but the motor was horrible.\r\n3. I had a 1985 Volvo 240 GL. Good car, but it wasn't as reliable as the 1978. Our daughter got into three accidents and both she and the car survived.\r\n4. I had a 1989 Volvo 240 DL Wagon. Another great Volvo with very little problems, but it did have rust and was a CA car. One of the owners lived near the beach and the car had rust. Other than the rust, the car was great!\r\n5. Owned a 1985 Volvo 760 Turbo. I liked the power and handling. Not as good handling as the German cars, but better than the 240. Great visibility all around. Easy to drive. Nicer interior than the 240's. Lots of things broke on this car. Wiring under the hood went bad - time consuming fix that I did myself - I'm an elec engineer. Went through many fuel pumps (in trunk and under the car - there are two on the car). An intake plenium cracked (rubber) and was replaced. A heater hose cracked and leaked coolant (curved piece going to firewall). Plastic pieces on the interior broke - disappointing. Sunroof jammed on many occasions. Radiator leaked and was replaced. Then at 195 Kmi, the tranny started slipping. I got to 200K and got rid of it. Very disappointed in the longevity of this car - I expected more.\r\n6. 1995 Volvo 960 Wagon. More problems than the 760 Turbo. Self leveling suspension = expensive to repair - shocks are very expensive. Power seat plastic (that holds the switches) made of cheap plastic - broke. Radiator leak - replaced. Then the motor blew - overheated on a long grade. Still sitting at my mechanic's shop. Has 118K or so on it. Worst Volvo purchase ... well, on par with the 265 Wagon.\r\n7. 1996 850R Wagon. Great little car. The 5 cyl turbo really gives this car some oomph. Handles better than the 700/900 series cars. Lots of space inside, but not too big outside. Some cheap plastic remains on this car. Also ABS/TRAC issues. Comfortable seats - better than the 700/900. I still have it and will keep this one for a while.\r\n8. 2002 V70 XC. This car is a trooper. Has had some issues though. Power seat isn't working and it's in an odd position. Trying to get a replacement seat frame - found a couple on Ebay and will buy soon. Rearview self dimming mirror went bad. I've had one of these go out on another car I've owned (Jaguar XJ). I think I'll just put a clip on mirror over the existing one. Headlight dash dimmer went bad. I just replaced it with an Ebay part. Works great. Seats are very comfortable for long drives. Cargo area is large and easier to load - XC sits higher. Turbo 5 pulls nicely - good motor. AWD is great for driving on twisties. Oh, also had a power steering problem - pump went bad. And it took forever to clear the monitors so I could smog it. The car has 248Kmi and it's going strong. Most times the battery voltage would drop and the car wouldn't start. One time, the voltage kept going higher - I remember seeing the voltage keep going up as the RPM increased. 16V was the top of the gauge and it was pegged at 55 MPH or higher. I pulled the alternator and changed it AGAIN!\r\n\r\nThe good things were\r\n1. Great handling car. Even though it leaned a lot, it went through the corners really well.\r\n2. Comfortable suspension. Not floaty, but comfortable.\r\n3. Nice seats. Comfortable for long drives - my car had cloth seats.\r\n4. Safe. I got in an accident with a Toyota Pick Up Truck. The other driver pulled out from a shopping center and tried to cross two lanes to get to the left turn lane. I was in lane 1 doing 40-45. It happened so quickly, I don't think I even had time to hit the brakes. My front right corner was crushed. His left front collapsed. I was in grad school at the time and a heavy textbook was on the passenger seat. The textbook flew into the glove box and smashed the door and ended up in the glove box. Being a young, invincible man, I thought nothing of the accident, but the next day my neck and shoulder were stiff. To this day, I have neck and shoulder stiffness from that accident. The car did save me - those old Audi's are strong.\r\n\r\nI was trying to explain what driving a Volvo is like to a client of mine. I came to the conclusion that a Volvo is a comfortable car, though not a luxury car. It's very safe and the engineers are magicians when it comes to safety! Most importantly, they're one of the few cars that it feels like you're driving faster than the speedometer says - and the speedometer is accurate.
