We are blessed here on BaT right now. This is one VERY clean Lamboghini. No picyutres of rust anywhere. Nice photo gallery BTW. The engine room is gorgeous. As was mentioned in the last Jarama sale, the side drafts just look so much cleaner that the downdrafts. I would say the Grenada Red was probably a good move up from Green. So, the engine needs an exam. Fortunately, there are Lambo engine folks out there. Now, as to what it might be, that will be up to an expert. I've seen Lamborghini engines torn down. Everything is a thing of beauty. If there is one thing Lambo did right, it was casting aluminum. These engines are no harder to work on than any other DOHC engine. Just more parts, and pieces. Do your homework before hand. Have a plan. Do not let the engine scare you. This is one very fine Jarama. If you want one, this is a good one. Oh, and gorgeous interior! It sounds a bit noisy to be just piston slap on a cold motor, but they can be pretty loud. It's more likely to be something a bit out of adjustment, when I bought my series 3 Espada it had a similar noise. It turned out that the cam chain had enough slack to be hitting the side of the cam chain cover on both banks. Fortunately a bit of time spent making adjustments and servicing things properly got everything back in it's correct place. These cars can really suffer from not being properly fettled. The engine and running gear are essentially identical to the later Espada and by and large it's all pretty good. This car actually looks decently good and honest. It's obviously had bits of work done here and there, but that's part of keeping and using one of these. In fact about the worst thing you can do to these cars is to not use them. They are old tech high revving Italian performance engines, and the way to get high revs back then was big clearances, making for a noisy engine. So the most important thing you can do is to feed it clean high quality oil at regular intervals (something that is not really noted in the service records). I can see one service, but it seemed a bit on the cheap side considering there's 14 litres of oil in that beautiful finned alloy sump. In some ways you could consider these to be oil cooled engines. It's like owning a classic Ducati, fresh oil every thousand km is a must if you want the engine to last. On this, you could probably get away with every 2 thousand, but leaving it till 5 would probably be stretching the friendship. These days I use top quality synthetic, in the correct viscosity. When synthetic was new it was too thin to give safe lubrication in these motors, but that's not the case now with the thicker oils available. One of the things these cars suffer from is from either stuck rings from varnishing, or cracked rings from running them hard while still cold. Either of these issues will cause a smoky engine, but one is curable with decent oil, frequent changes, and a bit of enthusiastic use when warm. These are quite cold blooded and you really won't warm them sufficiently by letting them warm up at standstill. The water comes up to temp, but the oil doesn't, then the owner drives off on what he incorrectly assumes is a warm motor, except the oil is still not up to temp. It is actually possible to shear the oil drive off if you give them a big rev on cold thick oil, though it's not a common thing. Warming them up by driving them as soon as they will run smoothly, but then driving them gently keeping the revs down till the oil temp gauge shows a good operating temp is the best way to treat them. It's interesting that from the service records it looks like both the clutch master and brake master cylinders have been rebuilt twice in the period the records show. Perhaps not being exercised frequently enough? I'm a bit curious about what was going on with the wheel bearings. They seem to have been replaced one at a time by different shops, and then replaced a second time a few years later. While it's good to replace old bearings on a car that will do nearly 170mph, I would always replace in a complete set, making sure they all match. On a side note, the clearance for these bearings is pretty critical. The correct clearance spec for these wheel bearings is clearance spec 'C'. This is the loosest clearance, giving the bearings maximum room to expand if run at extended high speeds, creating a lot of temp in them. I really don't know what would happen with a spec 'A' set (standard size) fitted, but I've been told there is a possibility of having a bearing either seize, or fail, not pleasant at high speed. Workshops that are unfamiliar with these cars may not know this (regardless of how much they charge hourly), and it seems some bearing shops aren't terribly clear on this either. I noted that when the rear drive joint was changed the tailshaft then needed balancing because of vibration. Generally changing the rubber donut (yes, just like an Alfa) shouldn't require balancing, but generally does because the bolts are not marked with their position in the carrier before disassembly. The genuine bolts are hollow and should balance just fine as long as they go back where they came from. Unfortunately a lot of shops assume they are just identical bolts and throw them all in a bucket together. Then it needs balancing. It's really an advantage to have a mechanic who does really know these cars, or take the bull by the horns (so to speak), and at least learn how to do the servicing and simple repairs yourself. These are pretty easy cars if you're mechanically minded, don't be put off by the apparent complexity, they're not that complex, just that there are 12, or 24, or 48 multiples of everything to keep track of. Just be neat, lay things out and keep an eagle eye on everything. If you get to nut 47 fitting the carbs back on, and can't find the last one, you'd better be sure it hasn't found it's way inside somewhere. On the subject of carbs, don't be intimidated, DCOE40's are pretty straightforward. I panicked a bit about having to tune them with a set of 12 vacuum gauges (what I had been told by someone), till I had the sense to buy a factory Weber manual for them, and made the interesting discovery that the factory recommends setting them by counting turns out from fully bottomed on the idle jet screws, and then synchronizing them with a sized drill bit under each butterfly. Yes really, very straightforward (and they run just fine set like this). This is really a lovely car from what's visible. I tend to prefer original colours, but this darker colour seems to really just match the car. It seems honest right down to the dings on the front chassis rails (very low), and the scrapes on the front saddles on the sway bay rubbers. These bit's invariably are the first parts to hit the concrete, on the ramps when turning into service stations, driveway etc. Learn to live with it, these cars are insanely low. If I was cashed up, you would not see this car for dust, I'd absolutely jump on it. That means someone is going to be a really lucky new owner. Yes it's always going to need things done to it, but it's a proper Italian steed, and no-one in your suburb will have another one, possibly even, no-one in your city. From the looks of it this might sell for half of what they're really worth, lucky buyer. Enjoy.
