The owner said he could work there as long as he wished. Then the owner died, and he was laid off at 80 by the son that now ran the place. He told us that maybe he wouldn\u2019t need to look for another job, at that point.... He was the youngest of nine children, born on the farm, in Nebraska.\r\n\r\nAnyways, he would grab nice used Studebakers that were traded in. Probably for very little cost, I\u2019d wager.\r\n\r\nHe would then drive them for decades, it seemed. He had a bullet-nosed Commander (in battleship grey, of course), then later a baby-blue Lark. I\u2019m sure they were reliable and very cheap to operate. This car brings back some great memories of fishin\u2019 with him, on the North Platte river. We\u2019re talking worm-on-a-hook kinda stuff.\r\n\r\nOne day, we were sitting at the edge of the water, fishing from the bank of the river. About eight feet away, a snake slithered into the water via the weeds.\r\n\r\nHe said \u201cthat\u2019s a water moccasin. After all, the GT already had a near-Packard grille... What really happened was Brooks Stevens designed the Brazilian Willys Aero remodel in 1960 and presented it to Willys do Brasil in Jan. 1961. It didn't go into production until 1963. Sherwood Egbert, with help from Stevens and a tooling crew working overtime,\r\ngot the remodeled Hawk into production for the 1962 model year (that is, before the WIllys) after starting the previous year. And Stevens ultimately wasn't stealing from himself; the T-Bird 4-seater had appeared with the same roofline, right down to the trim band at the sill line, in 1958, 3 years before either of the Stevens projects reached sketch form. When the roof was falling in on Studebaker-Packard and Curtiss-Wright picked up Packard's new Utica plant, I've never understood why S-P didn't work out a lease-back on the engine-transmission part of that plant. (Utica was 1 million square feet; everyone forgets today that its main justification was for Packard's Defense work and for their plans to expand their aviation and marine engine business.) Everyone knew that Studebaker's great V-8 was at its practical capacity limit already in 1956 at 289 cubic inches. But the Packard engine had lots of room to grow - the Senior '57 Packards, had they gone into production, would have displaced 440 cubic inches. I've never found any reference to the idea of continuing engine and transmission production at Utica being discussed as part of the Curtiss-Wright deal. Yes!
