I have been quite conflicted about letting this one go, knowing absolutely nothing like it will ever come my way again. \r\n\r\nI bought this extremely rare AMX from the original owner back in February of this year. He and his brother talked their father into buying it for them new in January of 1970. It was regularly used by them for 12 Summers until being taken off the road and stored for 38 years, from 1983 until January of this year. This vehicles still wears the last 1983 registration sticker and carries the remains of the Kings Point US Merchant Marine Academy sticker on the rear window, where both attended college.\r\n\r\nOther than a partial color-sand and some \"elbow-grease\u201d cleaning, nothing has been done to affect the cosmetics on this car. Over $20,000 has however been spent to date on the careful rehabilitation of all of the mechanics of the car to make it absolutely the most perfect driver possible. This includes more than $4,000 spent on a seven day dyno-tuning session completed just two weeks ago.\r\n\r\nEvery exterior panel has a ding, scratch, dent and more than a few have multiple combinations of all of the above and I consider everyone a badge of honor. Given the extreme rarity of this car and this particular model, a new future custodian will perhaps give the car a fitting repaint but I would hope instead it is kept as is. It is one of those \u201cits not the miles but the years\u201d things...\r\n\r\nMany rare, wild, North American Vinylos gave their lives and sacrificed their soft-supple skins in the construction of this car\u2019s interior. All of the Vinylo panels including the very fragile dash pad and door skins are without warping of deforming of any kind, something that is almost impossible to find on one of these cars. All of the carpets, interior trim, headliner and sun visors are also completely original.\r\n\r\nThe only two items that do not work on the car as new are the clock and radio. I had both looked at closely but unfortunately AMC chose very poor quality, off the shelf items and there just is no practical way to repair either. Both could easily be converted with modern backings and made functional, but I chose to leave both as is.\r\n\r\nSeveral AMX Gurus have traveled to come and see and inspect this vehicle in preparation of the sale. They were very helpful in photographing and documenting all of the car\u2019s individual components and features, all of which remain completely original to the car as delivered new. Just 1,632 examples were completed.\r\n\r\nThis particular example was built sometime between December 15th and 19th but delayed a few days until December 24th, 1969 do to a very involved set off special options ordered for the car. The ordered for this AMX was initiated sometime in the late Fall of 1969. It was processed through American Motors New York Corporate Zone 38 via AMC Dealer Number 11743 which correspond\u2019s to \u201cBob\u2019s Rambler\" located at 1220 East Jericho Turnpike, Huntington, New York. The original order was placed by the selling dealership for an all out, fully-optioned, performance example with every high-out put and luxury option available. The car was fitted with top-of-the-line, 390ci / 325bhp engine, 4-speed Hurst shifter, manual gearbox, \u201cRam-Air / Power Blister Hood,\u201d AC, \u201cGo-Pack\u201d and numerous other performance and luxury options. Pastor Arnott, while always interested in special automobiles but this time was talked into buying the car by his two teenage sons. How they convinced their straitlaced, conservative father to buy this loaded-out, \u201cMuscle-Machine\u201d is a story all on its own. Suffice to say, the sons never even considered sharing the car with their father.\r\n\r\nThe Arnott family was very familiar with their local, Long Island, NY, AMC dealer, Bob\u2019s Rambler. In 1961, Pastor Arnott purchased a 1961 Rambler Ambassador Wagon for his growing family needs. It only made sense to use the dealer\u2019s services again when they bought their new, top-of-the-line, AMX.\r\n\r\nBob\u2019s Rambler had been an authorized AMC dealer since 1958, they would remain in business, expanding to Bob\u2019s Hillcrest Motors, Bob\u2019s Hillcrest Dodge and finally Mitchel Dodge but after nearly 40 years in business, all of the franchises and showrooms closed for good on September 6th, 1994.\r\n\r\nWhen Pastor Arnott passed away, the car was formally given to the younger son, Robert who would keep it for the next 40 years until his own health began to decline. The car was then entrusted to the older, son, Charles Sr., a good friend of mine and partner over the years in many special vehicles. Charlie Arnott had the car shipped to his local and very well-known classic car mechanic, David North, owner of:\r\n\r\nThe North Street Garage\r\n\r\n212 North Street\r\nEaston, MD 21601\r\n\r\nUpon arrival at The North Street Garage, Charlie authorized a mechanical and cosmetic reconditioning of the car with an emphasis on retaining the car\u2019s blisteringly original condition. Over the next few months, David North rebuilt, services, repaired and cleaned the car thoroughly. (See photo gallery above for notes and invoices form David North.)\r\n\r\nIt had been many months since I had last heard from Charlie Arnott when early on Saturday morning, the 6th of February, 2021, Charlie texted and told me about his families AMX. I had heard about several of his fathers famous cars including a Marmon and a 16-Cylinder Cadillac but I had never heard about the AMX. He explained the details regarding the car and the family ownership and care of it as well as the lengthy work being undertaken by David North.\r\n\r\nThere really was no room or place in his life for the car and he wanted to know if I could help him sell it. I told him that I had always wanted such a vehicle but time and circumstance had never seen one come our way that would work for me.\r\n\r\nA week later, on February 12th, we agreed to a sale and payment was dispatched the same day. The car was picked up from The North Street Garage on Monday, February 22nd, 2021 and delivered to my family home in San Diego eight days later.\r\n\r\nOver the next few months, I continued to have the car further carefully serviced and cared for always with an eye on preservation. Initially I spent and additional $2,000 plus on renovations and repairs to some of the non-operative items such as air conditioning system, horns, lightning and other minor details.\r\n\r\nI also schedule and had the car delivered to the Dyno Shop in Santee, California for a full and total dyno tune up beginning with an initial power up run followed by carefully adjustments and jetting of the carburetor, new plugs, wires, coil and a hidden Petronix ignition system. All of this work saw the original components carefully set aside and preserved.\r\n\r\nI have always been interested in these rare AMC two-seat, sports cars going back to my earliest memories of seeing a green one in a parking lot at our local ice cream stand. Even at the age of ten or so, I could not believe something made of metal could be so beautiful. As I grew older, the cars in my budget were rusty Mustangs and Camaros and an AMX never came into play. All these years later, of the thousands of cars that came and went through our company and my own collection, very few \u201cMuscle Cars\u201d past through our doors, mainly a few Shelby GT350 and 500 models. It has a fairly high pick up point and locks up instantaneously with no issue. With the close ratio gears and 3.91:1 final drive ratio it just rips off the line and through the gears. I am a professional race car driver and never abuse cars on a public road but when you stand on the gas pedal, you literals cannot shift gears fast enough.\r\n\r\nI also did something few would bother doing. I spent more than $4K over a seven day period having the car tuned professionally on the dyno. This was a meticulous way to totally sort and dial in the carburetor, ignition static and dynamic timing. It was not really done to see what kind of max BHP and Torque we could get and it was done on an ancient dyno but it really let the technician get everything absolutely perfect. \r\n\r\nI even had a third rebuild of the carburetor done with careful attention on the idle circuit to get rid of any hesitation and the float bowls were give very careful attention and there are zero flat spots through the entire RPM range.\r\n\r\nThe most notable change after the dyno tune was finished two weeks ago is that the car will now run on pump 91 octane gas with no dieseling. It also has a much smoother idle and most dramatically there is no more points bounce at hight RPM. The torque curve is now also completely flat from 2,700 RPM to redline, which translates to absolute rocket ship acceleration all the way to red line.\r\n\r\nWhat surprised me the most was how good the handling and braking is on this car. In my youth, I had a never ending series of Mustangs, Camaro, Firebirds etc... all through High School. Every time I found an AMX within my budget ($1K to $1,500) it usually had no floorboards left and rust on every corner so bad you could look through one side of the car and out the other.\r\n\r\nThis one is absolutely bone dry. The lower fenders front and rear have almost no paint left from years of use and road sand blasting but no rust at all. The bottom side of the car's pans still carry all of the original Factory red-oxide primer and the only rust is surface rust on things like the rear axle housing, springs, suspension etc...\r\n\r\nI believe the paint is completely original but also totally shot. Every panel is thin and has numerous nicks, scratches and minor dings. While most would probably give the car a full repaint, I absolutely love the worn out look as under the ancient paint, the car is just perfect other than a clock and radio that are non-op.\r\n\r\nLittle things like the hidden horn ring band on the steering wheel work perfectly as do all the lights, switches, locks and latches.\r\n\r\nI had the radio and clock out for repairs but both are essentially made from the worlds cheapest components and not in anyway practically rebuildable. Both could easily be adapted with modern components and simply use the original face plates if one so choses.\r\n\r\nLook closely at the photos of the dash pad, door pads, headliner, seats and carpets. All is exactly as it was when the car was sold new. Most however carried lower spec engines and even most who ordered the brutal 390 / 325 engine, chose to have it connected to a slush-box, automatic transmission.\r\n\r\nI have forgotten the total number of 1970 390 / 325, four-speeds completed but it was just a fraction of the cars built this final year.\r\n\r\nAnyone who has driven one of these with the 390 / 325 and close ration, manual gearbox will tell you they are far more Sports Car than a Muscle Car. Some more updates and photos per request.\r\n\r\nI have had several inquires and statements asking if this was the New York Motor Show Car and if it was also the vehicle featured in both of AMC\u2019s 1970 sales brochures. This could not possibly be the same car. While it looks identical to the Golden Lime Green one featured in both brochures, if you look closely the one in the brochure has a 8-Track player and my car came new and retains the base AM only radio. \r\n\r\nAnother vetoing factor is that the AMC Press and Show car would have been a very early production example probably built late in August or very early in September. Unfortunately the AMX dash plaque cannot be read but rest assured, having come from the original owner, if this was the NY Show Car, the owner and his brother would have remembered this during their purchase in January of 1970.\r\n\r\nFinally this AMX was completed on December 19th, 1969, give or take a day or two and dispatched a few days later. Far too late in to the year to have been a promo car of any kind.\r\n\r\nRegarding the AC option as well as all of the others, yes, AC was exceptionally rare. Roughly 1 in 4 1970 AMX models had AC.
