While the MR2 isn't the first to have the design Toyota was certainly the first to bring it to mass market. Engine designers had it on the drawing board as early as the 1910's I believe and many WWII planes and tanks such as Ford's wonderful 32 valve V8 GAA engine had the architecture but no manufacturer that I'm aware of used it in mass production for automobiles until 1984. My father always claimed the Japanese were at their best when taking someone else's design and then improving on it and this is a perfect example. I was a sales manager at a Toyota dealership in the eighties when the MR2 came to market and we fell in love with it at first WOT test drive. Toyota used some type of dual stage carburetor that let the second stage open at around 4200 RPM as I recall and we loved to hear that sound. Before long there were four valve six cylinders and then V8's and the horsepower race was on again. Added power without the problems and expenses of the turbochargers of the day. Without Toyota's lead I'm sure it would have been at least another decade before that trouble free power addition caught on. Thanks for preserving and bringing this outstanding eighties icon to BaT. It truly looked like something added by a company such as Trim-Line that was was bolted on for $299. Toyota used simple codes for their options like \"SR\" for sunroof, LA for leather and so on. I believe they used the simple code \"SP\" for the rear wing option. This is indeed a rare color from my recollection and probably the lowest percentage seller they built. Surprisingly enough in my estimation the best seller was a brilliant medium blue followed by red. My bet is @MXander-5 knows the answer to the production numbers. In Salt Lake in the mid eighties a local forger caught selling phony historical documents to the LDS church named Mark Hoffman blew himself up in a blue one trying to cover his tracks. He probably survived due to the top blowing off of the car. So this car with the gold finish and no spoiler is surely a low production number. Bought it with my first pay check once I got a full time job. Car had a blown head gasket, learned a lot doing the replacement. Take the trunk off to sit in the rear trunk while doing the head gasket. Can confirm non-interference engine. I messed up a timing belt job and the belt turned into mush. Timing belt is an easy job, access it from the passenger side rear wheel well. Water pump is a little harder to get to but straight forward.
