I'd take it a step further and say it is the nicest MANUAL trans non-GTI/GLI Golf or Jetta to appear on BAT.\n\nAfter the \"Malibu-ized\" 81-84 Rabbits (the non-GTI), VW decided to move VW back toward its German origins with the US Mk2, including using the \"Golf\" name, so these cars were quite close to what the Germans got, the rectangular (vs round) headlamps being a US \"feature\".\n\nWith the fuel-injected 1781cc engine (most Euro Golfs had a 1,588 cc variant, which we saw in the US in the 76-77 Rabbit/Scirocco, and many Euro Golfs were NOT fuel-injected), and many Euro Golfs had even smaller motors.... this would be a higher-end Euro Golf.\n\nDuring my first visit to Germany, vacation, it was in Hertz 1989 Golf 1.6 similar to this, that I set my speed records of 188kph as a driver, and 192kph as a passenger, down long inclines. On level ground, it was about 160-165kph, or about 100mph. A US Mk2 8V (that's 85-87) GTI was about 116mph max, this should split the difference (if you care to try).\n\nIn any case, I did drive test drive one of these new in 1986.
