By the time I decided I would like to own another one the rest of the world had figured out how cool they are and the prices had shot up. Now in hindsight it was a pretty car and very classy, but kids of American car owners just didn\u2019t like the German cars. BUT.. then.. this car (UR) arrived in my driveway for a visit. I remember him telling me that the price they got from the Audi dealer was non negotiable and only because his father had such a long history buying from them they were able to get it.. This is the UR .. he kept saying to me.. like a possessed 18yr old he was aiming for the one car he wanted.. as we ripped through the Forest st. tree line road , winding down through to the countryside in our sleepy little home town.. the car was just at home .. humming along.. so crisp, so deliberate, so darn fast. \r\nGraduation came in \u201885.. never saw Jon much after that and always wondered what became of his car. 1991, June. I was on the prowl for my first car .. found a \u201886 Quattro coupe.. red on red.. my old man told me no way was he going to do co-sign on that car. A fellow salesman and I on an early Saturday morning pulled this car off the showroom floor and took it over to our own little \"test track\" near a local industrial park. We were both autocrossers ( I still am) and wanted to see how this car would go through the curves. Little did we know that the local Sheriff's department was training in the same area. After several laps on our \"test track\" one of the deputy's got in his squad car and turned on his lights. We high tailed it out of there and raced backed to the dealership and parked the car in the grass, then ran into the dealership like nothing had happened. About a minute latter the squad car pulled into the dealership and questioned us about the incident. We denied knowing anything about it as the Audi sat in the grass with heat bellowing out from underneath. Putnam's was a great dealership to work for. Doug Putnam the owner is a great guy. He sold the dealership in the 90's. I can attest that this is a fun car to drive and in the right conditions will out run most police cars.
