Yes I did finish the triple Hitachi carb project, and I mounted it on the engine and ran it for a month or two. In hindsight it probably wasn't worth it, mainly because the early stock setup is so good that it's hard to improve on it for a street car, and other reasons (below). A race engine could have used it, but there has been a triple Mikuni setup available for decades, so..\u2026..\n\nThe benefit from my triple Hitachi setup was at the very top end, which was predictable, and in the end I decided to go back to the stock. I think the reason the triple setup didn't show a big benefit compared to stock was due to two things.\n\nFirst, this is an early Canadian market car, and unlike US cars this car has the coveted Euro intake manifold. If you look at the balance tube on the intake manifold on this car's engine you see not only no emissions equipment mounted, but no bosses to mount the emissions equipment on. Also no air pump on these early CDN cars. That's the way the Euro market cars came, and this engine performed like a Euro engine from the start---noticeably peppier than stock US engines. \n\nSecond, I bought this car from an SCCA racer. It was his personal street fun car. He didn't race this car----I think he raced a Sprite or a Mini Cooper, but not sure after 4+ decades. \n\nAnyway, I test drove about a dozen early Z cars and this one, HLS30-03778, was by far the peppiest of them all, so I bought it, paying almost exactly what he paid for the car brand new. He knew I wanted it.....I guess it showed. \n\nI think this car was a classic case of \"break them in fast and they're always fast\". \n\nSo the car was fast from the beginning of my ownership, so there was less upside to be had from a triple Hitachi setup. I reverted to the stock twin carbs and was very happy with the car for the rest of the 27 years that I owned it.\n\nBTW, I carved the wooden patterns for the triple setup, and my father in law, who owned a foundry, cast them in aluminum for me. Sometimes the stars align just right\u2026... \n\nThanks for your comment on the engine build. I haven't ever heard of another one like it. \n\nThe seller, who bought this car from me, was smart: he made sure he got the original 240 block and 4 speed and various other parts from me so it could all be put back to original if a future owner wants to. \n\nAnd BTW, I don't think this has been mentioned yet----the engine has a Racer Brown cam, which explains the slightly lumpy idle in one of the videos. I would have put it in just for that idle. I have actually had car guys ask me at gas stations what V8 I had in the car when they heard the idle. After reading @macygray's commentary about twin carbs, I will agree with his assessment. I had my SU's tweaked and fine tuned by an old Brit tuner. I had a BRE 3/4 cam in my car, which I think is real similar to the Racer Brown cam. I had no problem sucking in enough air to pull 6,500rpm. I did have small oval air cleaners too. Tuning note here; Get rid of the stock clutch fan. Not only holds the engine back, but had a reputation of seizing, and propellering into the radiator. Electric fan was so much better. Yes, it happened to me. Recored the radiator to a triple row. The only thing this car needs is a rear spoiler. Balance that front airdam. That meant that the supply of the throttle handles stopped. \n\nBut at least the choke handle was the same basic design and fit perfectly on the throttle lever. From the picture, both choke handles in the car now are the early smaller rounded type, which are NLA, and were replaced by a larger squarish handle. \n\nThe connection from the throttle lever to under the dash is a cable that attaches to a lever that is part of the gas pedal assembly and extends upward from the gas pedal pivot point. You pull on the throttle lever and it ends up depressing the gas pedal. If I still owned the car I would be tempted to have it repainted in the original factory gold color, at which time the bump strip holes could be welded up and refinished before the car was painted. Since I never drove the car during the winter rainy season I removed the heater core to reduce weight. That was early in the car's life, and it had never leaked.
