Needs to be balanced. I run 35 all three tires. If not it will pull to one side or the other. When I did the Utah trip I put a 100 lb weight in the bottom of the side car for stability. It\u2019s been fun teaching the grandsons how to lean way over to the right while making a hard right turn. You can practice \u201clifting the chair\u201d they say while turning right. The difficulties were many to bring them to standards allowing them to be imported. The first 6 units arrived in a crate with side cars diss-assembled, there were 2 units without sidecars. Every unit was damaged, crating was not the forte of the factory at that time. After sorting them out the task was to make them run, they were all over the place to tune and constantly needed adjustments and very difficult to start. You could not make this stuff up, to believe these units would sell to the public was not imaginable. \r\n\r\nAfter 8-10 months of working with what little we had for spares we started to source parts from vendors in the US, Russian parts were both difficult to obtain and explaining what was needed was more difficult. We were able to get complete engines along with complete heads and cylinders but the tolerances were unacceptable. We ended up using hasting pistons/rings and installed our own valves/guides/seals. We also fitted Mikuni carbs and built our own intake manifolds. We doubled the HP with our modifications.\r\nNow they would run but failures came inside the engine, 4th gear was seizing on the main shaft from lack of oil at constant speeds above 40mph. (Irbit roads were not capable of 40mph for any length of distance and these bikes were strewn everywhere thru the small city) The splash system was not able to lubricate at higher speeds. We designed an oil valley to catch the splash and deliver it to the shaft, worked for a long time until engine development came later.\r\nI went to the factory in Irbit in 1995 for 10 days with a work visa and the main partner of the company who was attempting to import the units. The factory employed 5000 people, about half the town. They made/manufactured almost every part of the bike, I believe tires and cables were out sourced at that time. The factory boilers heated the town with steam but he factory itself was poorly run and quality was overlooked for quantity and boy did they build them in quantity. \r\nThe people were kind but very poor and seemed suppressed. The factory was government owned, the president, Voloshin, was kind and could speak English but the language barrier made it difficult to teach, showing them what we did for improvements only made the effort harder. \r\nI was the instructor for the first Service seminar for these units, I was also provided several gifts prior to leaving the factory including a watch with the face having USSR and Ural on it. \r\n\r\nIt was a trip I'll not forget but after leaving Moscow in a Aeroflot plane I landed in Switzerland and found a drinking fountain with fresh water! Everything to drink was carbonated, except the Vodka and that was consumed by all!\r\n\r\nThe units today are far superior, I don't believe the factory remains today but several years later it was sold to private investors who outsourced better components used today. \r\nThese are solid units, not for everyone but certainly a bit of long history. Different problems rear their heads with different years. In particular, there's a pretty well documented issue with the Ural-made alloy rims, which is one of the reasons that newer Urals (like my '21 GU) feature alloy rims from an established Italian manufacturer). The entire top end of these engines was redesigned in 2018 as well. I have no doubt that the seller is being transparent with the auction and acting in good faith...but the wheel issue was important enough for Ural to issue a recall for 2012 models. Just wanted to say: do your research. These bikes are incredibly fun, and a well-maintained rig can last. I waited for a while before I bought mine and felt that '21 was the right time. Happy I did because the new ones are terribly expensive, and now pretty much unavailable during this war, and in '22 there were new emission controls introduced to comply with Euro5.
