Unload the driven wheel and the kart went nowhere. We later replaced the rear end with a live axle, but it was enclosed instead of \u201copen\u201d and added a lot of weight. The later Darts designed a much better live axle rear end which really improved the kart. The 580\u2019s are nice engines, but were never competitive. You had to have Macs to win. This is a beautiful kart. The finger grips are located on the backside of the wheel. You are correct, there is a logo on the center of the wheel that was etched in by the original owner. The owner did such a good job etching in his name, I felt it was appropriate to retain his name on the kart. Additionally, keen viewers might note that this steering wheel is free from any Rupp markings. Based on my research from people in the Midwest, many of whom knew Mickey Rupp, the steering wheels in the early days did not have markings. It seems the markings came later on in the production cycle. Based on the other early Rupps in my collection and in friends collections, that seems to hold true. It is difficult for us to picture how these early karts were constantly changing in order to capture demand from the growing kart community. Truly a timepiece that has been saved here. Unfortunately most of these beloved old karts faded away in pastures and under barns. To me, bringing these karts back, helps to preserve a different time that seems to be fading quickly into history. If memory serves we used to ride two up by squating on the unused motor mount and holding on to the seat side support bars. Mine had a jackshaft installed with sprockets on each side to drive both rear wheels. A buddy in the neighborhood had an identical one that always seemed a bit faster than mine, so I removed the jackshaft because I thought it sucked up too much horsepower. He was still faster. Once he replace his drive wheel slick with a Knobby and could do a burnout with that combination. Back in that day there were a couple of local Kart tracks to have a fun afternoon. Otherwise I'd ride about half a mile though the streets to the high school parking lot to get my Ya Ya's out. Good times.
