There are others much more qualified to speak to the qualities and attributes of various Ducati models; however, I can offer my perspective based on my ownership of this 1098s the last couple of years. My first post on Facebook was something like \u201cThis beast is a loud, clackity, madhouse. I love it!\u201d I\u2019ve never done a track day, or even a wheelie, but I like to ride fast and I like a bike that feels responsive and nimble and, yes, fast. This bike does all that very well, as you would expect. But the flip side is that it doesn\u2019t really like to go slow. Puttering around town can feel a tad unsatisfying. Since my most common ride these days is to Starbucks, it does feel like overkill a lot of the time. When I lived in Reno, going for the \u201cshort weekend ride\u201d was easy, since the Sierras were right there. But Vegas is more spread out, so you need to make a commitment to go somewhere and I mostly haven\u2019t (despite the great weather). I\u2019m fortunate enough to still ride road bicycles aggressively, so the seating position on the 1098s feels proper to me (even something like the Aprilia 660 or the bike I had before, the BMW RnineT Racer, have slightly raised bars and can feel a bit like riding a mountain bike on the road). But my riding style is more of the naked sport bike type, so the Ducati is way beyond necessary from a performance standpoint. A talented rider on an upright sportbike would easily kick my butt, so it\u2019s just that I like the way I sit on it, the way it roars, and just how beautiful it is to see (and be seen upon). I really like the tri-color that just sold and Ducati red is iconic, but the black colorway on this bike is exceptional. I\u2019m not really a \u201cblacked out\u201d bike guy, but the red trim and accents and the carbon bits are stunning in person. All of which is to say that I think this bike, at this moment in time, really should spend the rest of its life as a weekender. The odometer is at 7793, which feels like the juncture where you either say race it or keep it as a second or third bike for the next few decades. I\u2019m in my 60s, so I bike I hold on to that long doesn\u2019t make much sense. If I were in my 30s or 40s, I think I\u2019d be finding a way to keep it around. When I bought my 1098, it was at the triple junction of a generous (and well-deserved) pay bonus, a desire to buy a new street bike and the unveiling of the 1098 at a motorcycle show. I'd lusted after a Ducati dating back to reading Cycle Magazine stories about Cook Neilson flogging his privateer 750SS on various tracks, including his amazing victory over the factory machines at Daytona. Ducati's advantage was its handling and tractability, and over the years it has lost weight and added power. As the seller notes, this bike doesn't like to go slow. I ride a Honda SuperHawk 1000 around town and it's geared down so it will happily chug along just above idle all day. The Ducati will screech and heat up and generally make you as unhappy as it is at any speeds lower than 30 MPH. Above that it will stick to the road, hold your line in corners and accelerate down straights as fast as you would like to go. Large enough for packing a lunch and tossing in a few small items.\r\n\r\nI also had a tail bag that I permanently mounted to the passenger seat. When I wanted that tail bag, just pop off the tailcone access cover, pop on the seat, good-to-go. Five second swap. This bag was large enough for my gym clothes, packed lunch, and other small items. This was all I needed for a daily commute to/from work.\r\n\r\nSpeaking toward comfort, the more core strength you have, the more comfortable you are going to be, because you are leaning forward quite far to the controls and your feet are definitely set toward the rear. I am 6-1 and 200 lbs with a weight-lifter kind of frame and I am quite comfortable on it up to an hour or so, then I need to get off of it for a few minutes to stretch. Cruising along I often found myself right hand on the throttle, left elbow on my left thigh, just riding along. \r\n\r\nMy commute was in substantial fast-moving traffic for the most part. One of the joys of commuting on a 1098 is that there is so much torque that you do not need to downshift to pass or accelerate past some idiot trying to kill you. \r\n\r\nOn the street, gear selection doesn't matter very much as long as your revs are 4000 or higher -- just hit the gas and it's over. The joy of riding it often got me through the doldrums of the work day as I would look forward to the commute home all day long, and if the weather was nice, I took the long way home in the summer.\r\n\r\nOne thing that made it great for a daily rider was having a pair of Gerbings battery operated heated gloves. Total game-changer. Often I would start my day before the sun was up and I would use these to keep my hands warm commuting in. Going home in the afternoon, I would often not need them, so I would just chuck them in the little tail bag and swap for something cooler that I left in there all the time. No worries at all.\r\n\r\nIf you get caught out in the rain on this bike you are going to get absolutely soaked as the bike offers no protection for that at all. This happened to me several times and I would just ride through it. Where I live, afternoon thunder is a hit-or-miss thing every day in the summer.\r\n\r\nAs for the weekend, if you live in an area where there are a lot of sport riders or fast car drivers, it is worth at least giving a thought toward what happens when you are out on this bike. This bike causes many guys with little you-know-what syndrome to absolutely lose their minds. I am a very fast rider, and I have literally watched noobs run off the road trying to show me how fast they are on their repli-racer bike. Maybe where you live this isn't a thing...\r\n\r\nOne last thing about the riding position -- it gets easier with practice. Your body will adapt. The better shape you're in, the better. If you need a motivator to get fit, this bike might even help motivate you with that, because once you have it and see how much faster it is than you are, you are going to want to get better. This was a dealer set-up if the customer wanted it after the sale. The Termig system was not emissions compliant, so the bike could not be sold with it already on there.\r\n\r\nFor the base 1098 and the 1098S, the exhaust was a customer add-on. The price was unbelievably cheap for what you got - the Termignoni full exhaust with CF cans, the DP ECU which eliminated the O2 sensors and mapped the bike beautifully, and the racing air filter which enhance air flow and also contributed to a great sounding intake roar.\r\n\r\nThe S added, for $4000 more over the base model, the Ohlins suspension (which is awesome), lighter forged Marchesini wheels, and VERY nice Ohlins adjustable shimmy dampener, and a CF front fender. An absolute steal for $4K. You can't even touch that margin of quality today for that much.\r\n\r\nSide note: A basic 1098 engine was absolutely horrible around town because the emissions-compliant setup made it unrideable below 4K RPM.
