They are sidemarker lights, amber at the front, red at the rear, and they are illuminated when the headlights are on - meant to help show the position of the car when viewed from the side (such as pulling out from a side street). Sidemarker lights have been mandated on every new car sold in the US since 1968 (and Canada has virtually the same regulations as the US). British Leyland added them to meet the Canadian law, just as later in the mid-1970s the huge 5mph 'safety bumpers' - front and rear - were added to Canadian-market Minis to meet that added requirement. \n\nLooking at it another way, even though the Mini was pulled from the US market after 1967, British Leyland begrudgingly developed the Mini to meet the ever-increasing Canadian regulations regarding lighting, emissions and safety. The day the car was delivered, I found out the motor was stuck. The next day, just for kicks, I started searching for a new motor, in case the one I had could not be unstuck. I found a few on eBay, but they were all 1275cc, in England, and expensive. So I took a look on Craigslist. There was only one. It said \u201csupercharged mini motor. So I call the guy...it\u2019s sunday afternoon at about one, and i obviously woke the guy up. I asked him how much for the engine, and he says \u201cten grand.\u201d I said \u201cnot for me, sorry to wake you\u201d and hung up.\r\nSix hours later the phone rings, and he says \u201care you the guy who called about the motor?\u201d I said \u201cyeah, but that was not the motor I was looking for.\u201d\r\nHe asks \u201cso what ARE you looking for?\u201d\r\nAnd I said \u201ca 1000cc stock motor for me 77.\u201d\r\nAnd he says \u201cyeah...I got one.\u201d\r\nHe named a price I could not refuse and a few hours later the mini motor was loaded into the trunk of my 1979 Cadillac.\r\nTurns out I had bought a transmission for a Range Rover Classic from him ten years ago. But when it was brought to America in 1980 by the second owner, he drove it very little before his untimely demise in a plane crash, and it was put away in a dry garage, on wooden blocks, for nearly forty years. The garage was dry. The only time the car was ever outside that I know of was about a week or two outside my local garage during the engine change while we waited for some parts. It did get rained on, but it was closed and the interior stayed dry. \r\nIf you look at the pictures of the car as it was pulled out of the garage where it was found for the first time... you see a lot of dirt and dust... but no rust.\r\nIf you look at the few underside shots in the gallery I took with my iPhone...you don\u2019t see any rust either. I'm taking this information from the Somerford Mini Specialists site which states:\r\n\r\nIt is helpful to know which A Plus 998cc engines are high (10.3:1) or low (8.3:1) compression ratio, and which are lead-free engines: High Compression Ratio: 99H/997, 998, A53 \u2026\r\nIt goes on to list the lead-free high-compression engines, and 99H/A53 is not among them.\r\n\r\nGiven the placement of the clutch slave cylinder, I'd say this is a pre-verto clutch, suggesting that is an early A+. Note when I got it back from the engine change they had not reinstalled the heater blower and horn(blower needs to go in first) and I have not reinstalled them yet, as I have memories of badly scratched hands from working under the hood trying to free the original engine when I first got the car. I did test both parts, they work, but you will need to refit them. In some ways I found the mini very difficult to work on, things are different from most cars with the transverse front wheel drive. Had to move all sorts of stuff out of the way just to get in to see the thing...which is why there were no pictures... the car was not really visible without some heavy lifting first...and once I could get at the thing, the first thing was to drop on my back on the dirty floor and put an iPhone flashlight underneath the car...the total lack of rust told the whole story. One minute later I whipped out the full asking price and the car was mine.\r\nThus began my mini experience.\r\nAlas...I did not check to see if the engine was stuck...but I would have bought it anyway, and things worked out well because I got lucky on the replacement engine.\r\nI\u2019m lucky in general...I have a nose for real barn finds, and I\u2019ve gotten some great ones...\r\nOh...what was my point?
