I\u2019ve also taken it to the national forest past Mt. Pleasant for a day of driving. If you have minimal driving options around here that\u2019s not a bad option. A few tight sections but a lot of fast sweepers and zero traffic. \n\nJonesgav.\nBecause all the documents are in Dutch and I knew people would ask I reached out to the main restorer in Holland to ask about the engine. He said the top end including belts was done by an earlier firm, at this point about 5 years ago. But since the car was taken apart around that time (and the rest of the car was not in drivable condition) I\u2019m as sure as I can be that the mileage shown on the odometer, which was turned back at the end of restoration, represents mileage on the belts. What I can say is after the recent ignition and tuning by J Frazar Sports Cars it runs very strong and doesn\u2019t blow smoke. I\u2019ll upload driving videos shortly. Regarding water pump, I have more restoration photos and vast amount of receipts for work in Dutch but don\u2019t know for sure so I sent an email to Lusso Classics asking. In regards to that issue the water temp and oil pressure stay perfect during stop and go traffic all day long here in Charleston. It\u2019s one of the things I never have to worry about.\nJRB\nYes you\u2019re right. Almost immediately after getting the car I had a piece of sharp metal road debris shred one of the perfect Pirellis the car came with and the garage here in Charleston put those tires on it as a quick fix without consulting me. So I paid for them and given the little mileage I\u2019m adding just using them. \nNaturopathicDoctor \nTo answer your questions, the car was stripped to bare metal and redone about 4 years ago. I don\u2019t have much info before that other than the Classiche letter that was posted. I have pre-resto photos showing the car as red as per Classiche report. Since the car was completely stripped and redone I haven\u2019t concerned myself that much with pre resto history though some is included in documents. I\u2019m relaying here the detailed condition description I sent to BAT much of which was omitted due to length. As you can see everything concealed inside the car was redone from sheet metal to suspension components. That all works well. The car handles beautifully, etc. however in my opinion final assembly (maybe the last 5%?) keeps it from being perfect. The paint could have been cut down again, the air cleaner was missing (who knows when that happened) the door window frames were misaligned, etc. I take J. Frazar\u2019s word that synthetic oil is a bad choice and it does shift better since being replaced. In addition I\u2019ve done what I can to correct the failing\u2019s I\u2019m capable of. Doors were taken apart and window frames reinstalled for correct alignment, correct air cleaner installed, etc. The \u201cwrong wires\u201d had nothing to do with the restoration. I had the Pertronix ignition installed in 2022 and J Frazar noted the period spark plug wires were not compatible and should have been changed at that time so he did it in 2023. The combination make a real difference. I restored the gas cap to more accurately reflect factory finish, I found a replacement for the worn gas cap cover spring (ridiculously expensive). When the local garage here in Charleston had the car for 4 months because of their inability to take care of the most minor task they washed the car a couple times without noticing that water got into the trunk and molded the perfect, period correct carpet. I\u2019ve spent at least 6 months chasing down the manufacturer in Europe to get replacement material. I\u2019ve been notified it\u2019s ready for shipping and will be included in the sale. The carpet is very presentable as is but it was disheartening to be damaged so I chased down new. Apparently the glove box doesn\u2019t depress enough to turn out the glovebox light thus draining the battery over time. The quick solution was to remove the bulb. I\u2019m sure this can be fiddled with. Otherwise the car will hold a charge for over a month and crank right up. The car isn\u2019t perfect but pretty darn close and you don\u2019t have to worry about all the concealed bits as the photos attest. I\u2019ve noted the belts in another response. \nKingkitesurf\nI like the plate and SC doesn\u2019t require front plate. So far been driving here and NC without being stopped. Basic body and chassis were built first, with a lot of hand labor, and then pieces separated for paint, trim, subassembly, and reunited later to the same chassis, for a better fit. Search FerrariChat and the internet to learn the locations where you can find all of the build number stampings, but the easiest place on the earlier 308 GT4 is on the top middle of the headlight brackets, shown in photos 192 and 239, with the numbers being upside down. Later ones have the numbers on the sides of the brackets. If your door panels are off, then you can look at the bottom door frame area, except sound deadening spray material may obscure your view. There is a place in the engine compartment, and other places less visible. If too much metal prep, primer, and paint, has been done, then the numbers stamped into the metal can be hard to find. My car is still 100% original paint, and they are clearly visible. You have to be a FerrariChat member (FREE) to see photos. There was a comprehensive 308 numbers list on the internet some years ago, but I am unsure if it is still on-line. Build number does not exactly match or even remain in sequence with VIN chassis serial numbers.\r\n\r\nIf you have or buy an early 308, read EVERYTHING that Birdman308 publishes on line, hopefully before something breaks, but you will certainly find him afterwards.\r\n\r\nFun factoid: At a Ferrari Owners Club NorCal tour of the Patrick Otis Ferrari shop (google him if you don't know the name), he told us that the Dino range of cars over the years included 22 colors.\r\n\r\nIf I could only keep one fun car, it would be my 308 GT4 that I have owned for about 33 years, for the miles of smiles and lack of serious problems. This one looks nicely done, but be patient with the small stuff that will inevitably pop up as the miles accumulate and you learn to live with these cars. Early 308 cars did not have a bleed hole in the thermostat housing, which is the highest point in the cooling system, and they developed an air lock that prevented normal coolant flow. You can easily add a simple bolt to bleed out the air, just like later cars. Sure enough, look at photos 207 and 209 to see that this car has not yet been retrofitted. Super simple to do, and I made my own housing gasket. Just drill and tap the existing cousing at the top in the size that fits Birdman bleed valves or a standard bolt, which I think was a simple 10mm. While you have the thermostat cover off, buy a BorgWarner 4256.80D thermostat and drill the pre-dimpled hole in the brass housing to allow a tiny bit of hot water to pass and a more gradual opening thermostat opening. Despite what I read on the internet, I did use the o-ring seal supplied without problems. Stant radiator cap 10331 rated at 16 PSA works perfect, and all of this stuff is basic NAPA store or internet available. Use air bleed thumb screws in the cooling system and radiator to bleed out accumulated air blockage, once in a while. Read more with Birdman308, also that normal coolant changes make a huge mess. Before you do your own, buy his easy to use drain taps for the engine and radiator that direct fluid where you want it with simple hoses. You will understand AFTER you just pull the plugs the first time and try to contain the coolant liquid. Worst defect in my own original car was the original old school silver Lucas cooling fans, like on this car. Their design has a narrow range of front to rear armature \"float\" axial play that will be totally consumed if the car becomes really hot, like idling for an hour in gridlock traffic during our Monterey Car Week, and then the fans temporarily seize up, boiling the coolant out of your car, and you stop on the side of the road, generally hating life, until you can add coolant and resume your drive. The old Lucas fans do cool down very quickly and start to work again, but your coolant is gone. SPAL of Italy is the OEM supplier of radiator and interior compartment fans for more recent Ferrari cars, and they have exact size and similar appearance black color direct replacement fans. If you hate worrying about overheating as much as I do, there is also a kit with the late pancake style big CFM SPAL fans that bolts directly into earlier 308 cars with zero modifications.
