They still wouldn't be considered quick today, but do have a lot of top end and can keep up a good pace on any road. Also driving enjoyment is about a lot more than just speed. These sound fantastic, handle and stop very, very well, are comfortable, have good visibility out for a mid engine exotic, (even for a lot of cars that aren't mid engine or exotic like your run of the mill Camaro), and they are jut plain old FUN to drive. They have great steering feel and feedback and are also relatively simple to wrench at home. If I were in the market for one, I wouldn't let it deter me. Now, I'm a Ferrari guy, but I always wanted a Merak since I was a little kid. Something about those flying buttresses were just amazingly cool.\r\n\r\nOne drive in the Merak and I was hooked. The car fits me like a glove. The SM V6, with its somewhat unbalanced 90-degree V6, sounds amazing and pulls to redline. I hate to admit this, but I have to be honest: the build quality on the 70s Maseratis is higher than the same period Ferraris. And, Maserati wasn't really building a sports car; they were building a refined GT car, and it really shows in the drive. Supple suspension yet responsive handling, great steering feel, a car that you just want to keep driving, one that doesn't tire you out.\r\n\r\nI will admit, I haven't driven an earlier Merak like this one with the Citroen hydraulics, but I sure would like to. In some ways it seems even more special than the later SS.
