The extent of Citroen LHM hydraulics in the Bora and Merak always seem to have some mystery around them. The Bora I know: Driver's seat up-down pivot, Pedal tray forward-aft, Headlight doors open-close, and Brakes - are Citroen LHM operated. Not the windows, they are electric with easily broken plastic gears. The conventional-looking brake pedal acts on a traditional Citroen 'puck' on the pedal rack which releases hi-pressure hydraulic LHM into the brake circuits. No master cylinder. The brakes are not difficult to modulate and I've read that Maserati's lead engineer Alfieri found the Citroen brake system superior to others and was fully behind the decision to use it. There is a separate single Girling master cylinder with a slave cylinder back at the transmission to operate the clutch. The Citroen bits are serviceable and rebuildable, with some recent changes in the vendors providing such service. \nDefinitely a Grand Touring design brief. You feel it's solidity. Stiff suspension, but very well sorted, with large tires set at 35psi. Engine in rear means a front that's ready to turn, but not excessive lift as you explore double the speed limit, just have finesse is all. Lovely, strong torque down low, and easy willing HP as the Webers inhale deeply giving a full-throated exhaust roar up to 5500rpm ...sublime sounds from idle on up to redline. Tuning Webers manually and getting the right timing chain tension manually can be time consuming, but worth the pride of accomplishment. It would be worth seller redoing the reading and confirming, as an engine rebuild in these is not a cheap proposition.\r\n\r\nEngine cover and all wheel hub caps are present, which is good because once gone they are hard to find. I cracked the aluminum. Nothing to do but throw it out and buy the replacement from MIE in Seattle - total cost $600 including balljoint. Bolt out the old, bolt in the new. Back on the road with hardly a blip. \n\nSomewhat contrary to your experience, I find my Bora very reliable. It's never left me stranded, even when the electric fuel pump crapped out on my way to the podium at the Hemmings Sports and Exotic Show last summer, all I had to do was flip the little toggle switch by the coil to energize the spare fuel pump, and keep driving. Yes, the Facet fuel pumps are so @*#^%# unreliable Maserati had the brilliance to install two identical pumps, wired and plumbed ready to go. The Facet replacements I got were crap from day one, so I threw them both in the \"archive\" of original parts and switched to Holley. \n\nWorried about the one cylinder with low compression? Don't be. If you can afford the car, you can afford the rebuild. Why? The Maserati 4.7 and 4.9 V8's powered everything Maserati sold for decades. Rebuild parts are plentiful and inexpensive, labor may be your issue. My quote was well under 5 digits for an engine out rebuild. \n\nEconomy? ...At the end of some particularly fun driving, one timing chain was making a lot more noise than usual. I got home, opened up the timing chain tension adjuster and found I had not tightened it down enough the last time I set the tension. The force from the chain had deformed the little steel \"dial\" piece that you rotate to adjust tension. I called MIE, they sent me the part, I spent about 45 minutes with it and reset the tension. Parts cost: $21.60 plus shipping. There is no way you can come close to that type of economy with a Ferrari or Lamborghini.. \n\nI bought mine sight unseen, having accumulated only 1,100 miles in the past 22 years with a blown head gasket, seller reported blue smoke pouring from the exhaust. I talked it over with Dave Burnham Citroen, and decided it was still a good enough starting point to buy it. I guess it was my lucky day. Upon arrival at Dave's shop we found no symptoms of a blown head gasket - no coolant in oil, no oil in coolant, good even compression in every cylinder, good leak down with no bubbles in coolant. Baffled, we ran the engine. Long story short, I'm still driving it \"as-is\" to redline and it shows no sign of blowing. Oil consumption is 1qt every 1000 or so. \n\nCitroen hydraulic rams and switchgear leaked when I got it. Had it all rebuilt for $1,700 and no leaks in 5 years. I agree, you just gotta use them. A couple years ago the brake calipers started weeping LHM, so I rebuilt them myself, no leaks. Was the rebuild kit even $70? \n\nAnyway - I think what I'm saying is these are not hard to maintain, they were built by hand so they can be rebuilt by hand. Join the Maserati Club of America and you'll find strong enthusiast and parts support. \n\nThese are bulletproof solid cars. Something will inevitably go wrong, but they are so fixable. Steaming hot inside. A/C was marginal, and with the windows open it wasn't much better; the aerodynamics were so good no air got in. Eventually sold it becuase I wanted to get my competition license. So I spent the next 10years having fun at SCCA tracks around the east coast. Let me restate and enhance my previous comment: the Bora is a unique automotive artifact of its time. I don't think there was any other car with its combination of grand touring capability and performance. It is a usable exotic that handles well. With very minor (and reversible) tweaking it can handle very well indeed. The engine is understressed and what is most likely to be wrong with them is lack of use and lack of proper maintenance. This is a car to use, maintain, enjoy. It's a good car for those that like to do a bit of wrenching with due care and attention. Speaking of attention, if one wants it the Bora will provide it. The shape is one of those far better shown in the metal than in pictures. It is smaller than photos suggest, but there is ingenious space for people and luggage. @rallyct 's comment on the a/c is one I can agree with, but I always suspected it could be improved.
