Based on years of working on these cars my thoughts are the oil tanks were moved back most likely because of the gas station attendant issue. Second could be cost related - on top of the added expense of more complicated parts there would also be warranty claims at the dealers for damaged engines. For one thing gas station attendants were everywhere back in the 70s and they were usually dumb kids. The oil tank oenping despite being labeled as oil, they still look very much like a gas filler. Also Jag had 2 tanks so maybe the attendants thought it was a additional fuel tank. I have personally seen at least 10 cars 1972 MY with early service history relating to spun rod bearing, ring failure, etc - often due to the loss of lubrication aka thinned oil with gasoline. The benefits of the forward mounted tank are there - having a more balanced car and yes the location helps with cooling - BTW 1972 cars are the easiest to add a factory type front mounted cooler all because of the 72 tank system. The 911R was the first to develop this forward mounted oil tank and it was so very cool that they put this design in a street car, even if only for 1972.... then it came back again in the 964 and 993 models. The reason to move the oil tank back to the rear would not be due to performance loss or that it didn't work, maybe warranty losses or the accountants arguing over extras expenses vs previous years.
