I had the car shipped from Iowa (where I purchased) to Phoenix, AZ (where my parents live), I drove the car back from Phoenix to LA (where I live) and it felt like driving a brand new car. In fact at times I completely forgot I was driving a 33yr old car. It\u2019s a complete time capsule! \r\n\r\nThe previous owner replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter as the car sat in storage for a long time. They also replaced the fuel level sender unit (but it was a defective unit). Previous owner also had the entire car and engine compartment detailed and replaced the interior headliner. \r\n\r\nUnder my ownership I\u2019ve replaced all of the tires, upper and lower cooling hoses, coolant flush, thermostat, serpentine belts, oil change, fuel level sender, cooling fan sensor switch, drivers side window regulator, antenna mass, windshield washer pump, and battery. Also had the AC system evacuated, pressure and leak tested, and converted to R134 (AC works perfect). Everything else on the car works and is original. \r\n\r\nThe ABS light is illuminated. I\u2019ve had two independent Saab mechanics in LA look into this - all wheel speed sensors are reading and okay - likely culprit is the ABS valve block and a stuck solenoid.\r\n\r\nIf you\u2019re in SoCal and would like to arrange viewing and test driving the car you\u2019re welcome to make arrangements with me directly. \r\n\r\nI\u2019ve owned lots of Saabs and currently also have a 1992 900 Turbo Convertible. On this 3 channel system when the warning light is on you have no rear brake pressure. If the pump cannot supply adequate pressure to the accumulator (or the accumulator can't store pressure ) it turns off the supply to the rear brakes. \r\nWarning lights are there for a reason, do not ignore them. Takes me way back to high school, when my family had several 9000's. We lived in Alabama, so we never saw other 9000's. Ever! My sister's first car was a 9000, 1989, but not CD, but I spent a ton of time fixing it over the years. \r\n\r\nI have seen the paint spiderweb/cracking on a number of 9000's in that same area below the side moldings, worse on some colors than others. The dark forest green ones definitely did it in the same fashion as this one. So I don't think it has anything to do with this particular 9000, just a Saab thing. I had many 900's as well, both single stage and base/clear, and several of them had paint cracking in odd places at the 10/20+ year mark, like the hood, or rear lower fenders aft of the rear wheels (c900), exactly like this. I think perhaps they had a thicker coat of clear in the lower areas which ironically was perhaps designed to offer more protection (?). \r\n\r\nPart of the \"fun\" of the pre 1990 ABS systems on these cars (ABS introduced 1988) is that there is no real way to diagnose it easily like the later ABS systems (1990+) that SAAB produced... I think there's a way to do it with hooking a wire up, but it's a bit archaic. However, in my experience, with this year, the ABS light is triggered permanently for a couple reasons: 1) one of the speed sensor connections/sensors is bad -- there are 4, 1 at each wheel, 2 connectors accessible under the rear seats, the other 2 up front ... 2) the ABS ECU has a bad diode or circuit issue (very possible, common to see bad 1989 ABS ECU's) ... or 3) the pump becomes weak and it throws a code as it takes too long to get up to pressure (this was more common on the 1990 c900 than the early 9000's w/ ABS. \r\n\r\nRe: #2... The ABS ECU sits in what is fondly called \"the aquarium\" which is under the plastic cowl under the hood right in front of the windshield. Water does get in there and cause the ABS ECU to ... go haywire. But as long as the other warning lights aren't on, your brakes are still... good brakes but I do not think actual \"ABS\" function kicks in when the light is on. Many people back in the day would simply pull one of the ABS fuses to deactivate ABS but keep brake function. \r\n\r\nA fun fact about this early SAAB ABS system by ATE. The front brakes are controlled by the brake pedal, as is usual. The rear brakes are only actuated by the ABS pump. \r\n\r\nOtherwise, these 9000 CD's were one of the first cars I can remember to have smoked taillights, the 80's auto climate control was super cool, the key fob is rad (and usually the plastic heads have broken by now). Cruising at high rates of speed on the highway at night with all the little green and orange lights everywhere on the dash (including EQ) is superb. Very fighter jet.
