Well, maybe add front disc brakes and then drive as-is. Mom had two first generation Cougars (out of a total of five or six), a 1967 and a 1968. The second one was a 302 two-barrel and, of course, hers were automatic transmissions and XR-7 trim. I would have preferred a 4-speed and 4-barrel like this one, therefore my like for this one. And I actually prefer the non-XR-7 trim here. The Cougars had such a nice basic shape that, to me, the higher trim level was just gilding the lily and hid some of the great basic shape. I\u2019ll be interested to see what this one gets and hope that no one messes with it.\n\n@mike_Rockwell - The Marti Report states that this Cougar was sold at Haas Lincoln Mercury (actually Johnny Haas Motors on the Marti), so you are partially correct in that they were at the corner of Colfax and Garrison. It later became Landmark Lincoln Mercury, but I don't recall when. Landmark also took over what was Kumpf Lincoln Mercury in Englewood - Haas and Kumpf were well known dealerships. I live a couple of miles from the Haas/Landmark location and bought a 2002 Cougar XR from them in 2003. The Cougar model had already been discontinued and every day I would drive past six of them that sat at the front of the lot (inches from Colfax, a busy six lane highway) for a year. I was thinking of looking for a used one when Ford put $3,000 rebates on the year old new ones; it was a no brainer to get the 2002. They were all optioned the same so I didn't even go outside to look at them - I just said I'd take the red one. The next day when I picked it up they said I made a good choice because that one had a six-CD player in it that wasn't on the window sticker - an extra for free. In hind sight the only problem I've had with the car is the six-CD player that's always jamming! The Cougar is in the garage next to the Olds Silhouette, fallen flags (a railroad term) of the automotive world.\n\nShortly after I bought the Cougar Landmark shut down the Lakewood location and moved everything to Englewood, and after the demise of Mercury they went to Lincoln only. I tried to find some history on Haas and Kumpf, but all you get are hundreds of hits for current dealers. The Garrison and Colfax location is now nondescript office buildings that seem to be never more than half occupied. That\u2019s progress! \n\n@johnsmyth \u2013 The reason my mom had two Cougars in only a year or so was because my brother drove the first one through the side of a house. Not quite a Rolly outcome, but close. The parents were away for the weekend and my brother and a friend decided to go for a ride in the Cougar. My brother had never driven a car, let alone didn\u2019t have a license. His friend had a license but I never found out why my brother drove. Three blocks from the house he hit the gas instead of the brakes, went full throttle across three yards, and T-boned the house. He drove through the concrete block wall of the garage. I was away at college and my mother sent me a picture of the now much shorter Cougar. They had their seat belts on and the collapsible steering column saved my brother\u2019s life. When I was at home that summer I noticed that the light fixture was missing from the ceiling in my parent\u2019s bedroom and asked my mother about it. She said that they got home late at night the weekend my brother totaled the Cougar and my grandmother, who lived with them, told them what had happened. My father went upstairs to get my brother out of bed, but instead he went into their bedroom and punched the light fixture off the ceiling. My mother suggested that I not say anything to dad about the light fixture. Yeah, Mom, not a problem. XR-7s came with a vinyl top, which has greatly fallen out of fashion in the years since. \r\n\r\nBut the best part of the XR-7 was the interior, particularly the instrument cluster. Meant to mimic the look of European cars like Jaguars, you got some of the most simple and elegant gauges ever put into a car of this size and price range. Beautiful white markings on black faces (a la Smiths, VDO, et al) and lots more gauges than the standard Cougar: a tachometer, ammeter, and oil pressure gauge. The base Cougar really scrimped on gauges, as even the most basic Mustang got oil pressure and amp gauges. \r\n\r\nThen there were the overhead map lights, door pulls, and so on. Don't get me wrong, the Cougar is my favorite of the original pony cars, I liked the string of XR-7s the oldies had, and we diligently rooted for the Cougars at the many Trans Am races we attended. \n\nJumping ahead almost a half century my '02 Cougar XR repeats some of the mistakes that various manufactures made with the original pony cars. It has faux carbon fiber inside (I think that's what it's meant to look like), a tacky non-functional hood scoop, and a larger trunk spoiler that blocks rear vision. I took the hood scoop off with the intention of putting anodized button head machine screws in the holes in the hood, but in their infinite wisdom Mercury screwed and glued the scoop on. A hood repaint wasn't in the plan, so there the scoop remains. The XR7 external trim package in 1967 has 7 little \"gills\" at the lower rear rockers and XR7 badges on the sail panels, and that is it. The 1968 has stainless rocker cover (as this car was supplied with), sail panel badges and an XR7 trunk lock cover. Very light trim touches.\nAs for the upgrade XR7 interior details, the faux wood dash with very clear large instrumentation is fantastic. Makes me smile every time I get in mine. The oil pressure guage is in the wrong place on the far dash panel but, I am sure the Mercury marketing boys swapped it over there so the average motorist would have a fuel guage in front of them and not object on the car lot. These standard Cougars really were shortchanged for instrumentation with those two idiot lights. \n\nThe XR7 came with a handy overhead map-light console with seat belt warning, low fuel level warning and \"door\" ajar warning lights, all safety features pulled right from a Lincoln Continental. Also leather seat surfaces. None of this could be had with a Mustang. \n\nAs for this car, some more replacement of rubber suspension components may be needed and maybe tighten it up with shocks, springs etc, if they are not fairly fresh. Maybe. They handle pretty nice with the small block once a front sway bar is installed, for car built in 1968. I love to toss mine around. ;-)\nDial in the car and enjoy it as is. I was proud of her work and her smile. \n\nWe have an automatic (C-4) in that car and it's just bulletproof and dependable and easy to ride in for miles and miles. It is crazy how many times riders comment \"Man, this thing is incredibly quiet and smooth. It really rides nicely\" in a Cougar. The experience is a leap ahead of a lot of traditional pony cars and muscle cars of their day. The Big Blocks are great in these cats, but they have their weight drawbacks, and heat drawbacks, and noise drawbacks. They aren't what I'd call long-range cruisers in 2018. The small blocks can still sound wonderful, have ample power for such a compact car, and run for miles and miles dependably.
