Their Dealer Code was 10-010. It was most likely used as a company driver for one our field personnel and then sold as a \u2018Brass Hat\u2019 to Hansel Knowling in Fullerton. It would have been highly unusual for a company driver to land in Chicago and be sold in Los Angeles (local Dealers fought to get every \u2018Brass Hat\u2019 they could). It was most likely used by an employee that was being transferred from the Chicago Zone to the Los Angeles Zone. The car was retailed by Hansel Oldsmobile as a used car, and the price charged was reflective of the discount they received when they purchased it. She liked me, and at the end of the drive she seemed to want me to buy it. I told her I'd sleep on it, but secretly I knew I wanted it. Then I mentioned it to my neighbor. He was much older and I thought wiser, and he warned me that working on it would be a pain with the front-wheel drive. He advised I stick with a conventional rear-drive car, and I heeded. It's GM mouse fur velour from the 80's, not the original brocade from the 60's. As far as GM automatics of the 60's I know the THM425 and the Powerglide pretty well. People are very prone to underrating or even discounting the Powerglide but it was an excellent transmission, far better suited than you'd think for a 2-speed. Great tow car (how I came to be familiar) because it can be flat towed, the transmission fluid circulates due to one of the dual pumps being driven by the differential so you won't burn it up, but keep it at 65 mph or less. This also means you can do a rolling start, unusual for an auto trans. Also a great trans for electric conversion, almost perfect in fact. It integrates well with modern traffic and is particularly at home on the highway at 75mph It\u2019s ride is neither harsh nor floaty \u2026 somewhere in the middle. Body control is good for typical street driving. Steering is very light as is feedback. The brakes are not good by modern standards, but I have never been scared. I believe that most of the reports from the day talk about fade after repeated hard use \u2026 I just don\u2019t use the car that way, so I can\u2019t comment. As others have said, latter year disks are a straight forward parts swap \u2026 but this one remains true to its original incarnation. I also believe that modern day radial tires do wonders. Front torsion bars for the FWD set-up were reliable, although the mono leaf rear with nonfunctional air leveling required an auxiliary leaf(not sure the Toro had that) From what I read of contemporaneous road tests, the braking on the Eldorado with 4 wheel drums was roundly criticized. Brake fade from 75mph was bad, and in modern traffic, a tough issue. I think there are braking upgrade available today that were not available then, and if you are not going to do heavy commute driving, likely not an issue, This car is a fantastic example, Incidently, 68 Eldorados got a softer ride due to customer complaints, so the 66-67 versions of both are likely the best handling. This is beautiful as it allows for equal length half shafts on the left and right side ... therefore no torque steer.
