In fact, for a while, he considered just cleaning it, sorting the mechanicals, and driving it \"as is.\" I know that as he did the restoration, there was a balance between saving original items as well as restoring others to get it to a cosmetic condition he would be happy with. I am in Ohio, drove it summer and winter. There was rust everywhere except the shock towers! Original Kugelfischer, everything. No matter how steep the hill or long the straight, I could only hit 109 & 1/2 mph! It had Behr AC, had never been recharged, and still blew cold (German) air. The rear windows would pop open on their own, there was NO weatherstripping, and heat came from a full length heavy wool coat. No matter how much snow, I could go anywhere I wanted, and the car was unshakable. Sitting at a stoplight one day, smelled gasoline and knew I needed a new gas line. My son was 6 years old and thought it was his car; I tied his child seat to the passenger front seat with an electrical cord! It was light Blue, faded, maybe Fjord? The synchro's were going out, and I sold it for $400 - my son was inconsolable and cried himself to sleep that night. 10 years later, on my 50th/ birthday, my wife bought it back for $400 and it was sitting in my driveway! I puked and asked her to please get her money back because every single piece was worthless and rusted, it didn't even run. Images taken during delivery and additional pictures in my archives, including participation at BMWCCA Oktoberfest in Wisconsin the same year clearly show a single trapezoidal mirror fitted to my car. Frequent visits to the dealer for warranty work gave me time to wander about the showroom and converse with the salesmen and parts people. I inquired about the redesigned \"flag\" mirror fitted to the first 1975 models during one of these layovers. Unfortunately its price (~$60) at the time was prohibitive - especially when the original, trapezoidal mirror was currently functioning without problem.\n\nDue to its exposure to the elements, the trapezoidal mirror eventually revealed a number of design faults that caused it to be less-than-popular. The single, upward-facing ball-and-socket post collected road salt and moisture. Chemical reaction with tensioning screw, spring and cup with the cast metal base would corrode the mirror into a single adjustment. And both those cars were nose-heavy with the original York Behr units to begin with.\n\nRe radios I had handy access to Stuckers junk yard so I did all my shopping there, including the entire Behr unit and as many Europa's and Mexico's you wanted for $50. The quality of everything (body, paint, glass, brightwork, interior, etc.) seems to be balanced -- which in my experience is one of the hardest things to achieve in a restoration -- and my overall impression was that it is absolutely believable that the car could have left the factory this way.
