I had the hub lightly trimmed (needed very little) and did away with the spacers. I have American Racing Silverstone wheels. I haven't heard of this with the LATs. But, I do know that on my Alpine, the front track is wider than the rear. That was intentional in those days. So assuming the Tiger rear end is the same width as the Alpine rear end (I can go and measure), the Tiger would have it too. So the offset you see in the pictures may be stock or there could be a spacer in there. \r\n\r\nAs an aside, the Alpine rear end with wire wheels was a little wider than the steel wheel rear end (because of the splined hubs). That Tiger, weighing about 2600 lbs with nearly 165 HP could make 60 mph in about 7 seconds! Trust me, in '67, this thing was a ROCKET. Scary? Not so much... But lots of fun. It was likely another 4 seconds quicker than an MGB. More like an E Type, or 300 HP Corvette. Or my 125 HP Westfield 11. \r\n\r\nToday, the performance is, um, \"quaint\". It could be blown away by a new Miata. Or a minivan. \r\n\r\nYes, the Sunbeam Alpine sized Goodyear tires were a bit small, and wheel spin was always a problem, especially with the axle wind up and open diff, when the car didn't have the Traction Master anti tramp arms. Traction was not so great with those bias plys, and real high performance rubber would be a decade away, but the cars were enjoyable, solid handlers. We didn't think of them as treacherous, as we did those evil 911s. \r\n\r\nThis one is a bit more powerful, with the 289 4bbl, but still not in the 4 second range that we consider \"fast\". Or is it 3 seconds, now? . Back in the day, a good Morgan +8 (500 lbs lighter) would blow its doors off. A Cobra would be faster, or maybe a Hemi Mopar with a 0~60 in around 5 seconds, maybe into the 4s with the right tires (slicks, of course). \r\n\r\nThis is one beautiful Tiger, and it was bought in the same week, from Larry Reed (the main dealer for things Sunbeam at that time) on Hawthorn (remember when this was an easy drive from WLA, down Sepulveda?), as my brand new Sunbeam 1725\r\n Alpine V, also with the optional hardtop. It even had a UUP California blackplate, too. \r\nBTW, my plate was mounted on the trunk lid, as I recall, lights on the bumper pointing up. As stated previously, the lights could be flipped. Perhaps the owner didn't want to drill any holes in the freshly painted trunk lid when they were reassembling the bodywork after the paint job? \r\n\r\nFinding an original owner car like this in CA is the Holy Grail for collectors around the world. All the original paperwork, from a time where it was not really important to keep that sort of stuff. It probably was never anywhere near rust, didn't get wet much and was well cared for. \r\n\r\nIt's owners must be older now. I was only 16 when mine was delivered, and this was a married couple... My mom is in her 90s. My guess is that the owner has to be a bit older than I am, being that the Tiger was not inexpensive, at around $4000 (not quite Corvette money, but definitely GTO/Hemi Mopar money, or nearly twice the price of my new Alpine with the hard top (and no radio). At a bit more than $3700 to finance, I imagine that the nearly $100 a month payment was a stretch for this young couple. But they got a really great car. \r\nI can understand the choice. I wanted one. Just about everyone did that I knew. \r\n\r\nAnd then, it survived through all that time. I kept one of my cars for 36 years, and another one for 34, but this Alpine... 53 years, give or take... When I think about life in general, and keeping one of these for that long, and keeping it in fine condition... \r\n\r\nThere is likely a lot of original content here, including the took kit with the \"King Dick\" adjustable spanner. The condenser was in the usual spot, in front of the radiator (more than one Tiger has had a condenser fitted horizontally below the trunk).\r\n\r\nI recall that the asymmetric stock cooling fan was meant to shift the entering vortex across the radiator core to assure better cooling. I was at the auction at the Petersen Automotive Museam for the Von Dutch sale, and purchased the Gold Toolbox with all kinds of stripping, graphics including the famous flying eyeball.\r\nsigned by Dutch in two different places. we use it in the shop and take it to the race track when we have to travel. it is a really cool piece, and is a working unit albeit in original condition and very nice. Whoever get's Ed's tiger in this auction is getting a one of a kind with the one owner provenance, Lord Rootes trophy documentation, all the receipts, pictures, etc. I would say this is one of the most original tigers out there. He was not the first owner, but someone 'knew someone at Shelby American' and that led to a 'special arrangement'. He remembered the chassis number of his car and, being detail oriented, I wrote it down.\n\nSomewhere I have the paper on which I wrote the man's name and the chassis number of his car. This fellow was a relaxed, middle aged guy and did not seem to need to prove anything in our conversation; he appeared to be on the level, and I always thought he was telling the truth. \n\nIs that conclusive evidence or does it confirm the rumor of a 289 in a Tiger before the Mk 2s?
