Compared to a 2002 the 1600 engine feels very revvy owing to its shorter stroke and lighter crank, flywheel and pistons. It does noticeably lack some of the torque of the 2L, and the small 36PDSI carb does make the car feel like it runs out of breath above 5500RPM (I upgraded one of mine to a two-barrel Weber using an intake manifold from a 518 and it made a world of difference. Hanging the rear-end out in turns and recovering was almost instinctive. I can also testify that it displayed impressive directional stability in a four-wheel lock-up panic stop skid (to offer a ride to a pair of fetching young hitchhikers; they politely declined the ride for some reason). I never give a second thought to this kind of handling performance at the time, as it was the first sports-oriented car I had ever driven.
