They were just being phased out as I was coming in the Army. At the same time these were still lurking the Army had mint green K cars as staff vehicles. I drove one of those austere, vinyl-clad lobotomy waiting rooms as the Battalion Commander\u2019s driver. I think the K car PTSD is more poignant than any encountered later in a combat zone.\n\nThese Dodge trucks were the last gasp for Mo-gas (regular gas for civilians) powered vehicles before the Army went to all diesel tactical fleet\n. \nNow hear me on this; I\u2019m not disparaging this particular vehicle in the slightest. This truck may be a fine choice for the collector who wants a rugged and unique rig with a hat tip to military history; I\u2019m just recalling my personal experience.\n\nI remember these things cranking for ages before starting (poor maintenance most likely). The ritual for a dumb private was to crank them until the battery died, then slave-cable to a running truck, and a can of starter fluid later, you were off. Several of these starting in the morning sounding like the plaintive cries of a herd of wounded buffalo.\n\nThe suspensions were buck-board stiff, the only consolation was how pristine the driver\u2019s seat remained because your butt spent very little time on it. The weight of the ambulance body on this truck may mitigate that somewhat.\n\nThe manual steering meant that skinny Private First Class Marve would steer by climbing to the top of the steering wheel, grabbing on with both hands and riding the wheel back down to the seat. I almost broke my wrist off-road at Fort Drum when I foolishly had my hands loosely on the center spokes of the wheel as the truck hit a rut and spun the steering wheel out of my grasp.\n\nLike most military vehicles they are geared for off road and were screaming over 60 MPH.
