While not as pretty as the 53-54's, or as performance oriented as the supercharged cars, these were \"end of the line\" on this design before Rhett slightly modified GT Hawks hit in 62. These should be fully sorted and be better to drive than the early cars and the 289 is a great little engine and will roast my stock 54 Commander. The engine and frame modifications make this a great car for relatively little cash outlay especially in comparison to the earlier cars. There is debate as to whether or not that event took place in a cheap walk-up in New York City, or in the booth in the back in the corner in the dark over at the Lucky Lady Lounge here in Fort Stockton. We\u2019re a proud bunch, and not above occasionally laying claim to a bit more than is actually ours to own.\r\n\r\nAt about the same time, Bob Bourke had recently designed a car that came to be known as the Studebaker Starliner. (Not even going to try to claim he did that in Fort Stockton; it is documented that Studebaker was headquartered in Fort Bend at the time.)\r\n\r\nOn the surface these two developments seemingly have nothing to do with each other. And yet . . .\r\n\r\nBob\u2019s little love song was titled \u201cIn Other Words\u201d. He later claimed that it only took him 20 minutes to write it and he never expected it to turn into anything. For the longest time, it didn\u2019t.\r\n\r\nSimilarly, Bob Bourke never envisioned his design actually being offered to the car buying public. It had simply been an assignment given to him by his boss at Studebaker, Harold Vance, to come up with a two-door, four-seat car to make the rounds at the auto shows in order to provide Studebaker with some much needed sex appeal.\r\n\r\nUnexpectedly, Bart\u2019s song ended up being recorded and Bob\u2019s car ended up being produced. This is where it gets interesting.\r\n\r\nThe song was originally recorded as a ballad, but somewhere in the process of being covered by Peggy Lee, Tony Bennett, Dion and the Belmonts, Marvin Gaye, and others, it actually became something much more than just a silly love song. (Sorry, Paul McCartney.) It went up tempo and became \u201cFly Me to the Moon.\u201d By the time Ol\u2019 Blue Eyes recorded it and made it one of his biggest hits, the entire country was getting ready to actually fly to the moon.\r\n\r\nAbout the same time, Bob\u2019s beautiful penned coupe was being updated and renamed, as well. The Strainer became the Hawk. Flight Hawk. Silver Hawk. Golden Hawk. Gran Turismo Hawk. A whole flock of Hawks, each its own version, just like Peggy, Tony, Dion, and Frank.\r\n\r\nFly me to the Moon\r\nLet me play among the stars\r\nLet me see what spring is like\r\nOn Jupiter and Mars . . .\r\n\r\nWhile I\u2019d like to have this pink \u201961 Hawk fly me to the moon, Buzz Aldrin took something a little more high tech in \u201969.
