Cerakoted calipers\n\nMany of the items had to be sourced from Europe and I had to wait several months due to Covid and related shipping delays.\n\nTo answer your question, why would I spend so much time and money on a car that is a non M6 or M635? Back in 1979 this was the most expensive BMW made, it was their high watermark car, please see the scan below from a period correct brochure I still own. It is a very special car with only 3,030 made in 1979 and only a very small handful that exist today especially in the U.S. This car has the 3.5L engine with 215hp (more than Porsche's 911SC / Carrera at the time) and paved the way to the future big brother //M models. The work I completed on this car is akin to the love shown by air cooled 911 owners (that are non 930 cars) or E9 owners with their non CSL cars. I did have every intention to keep it but a recent reality check means its time to thin the herd and sadly this car has to go. One is a 1985 European M635Csi with the M88/3 engine, while the other, like yours, is a non-US 1980 635Csi. The 1980 was built with right hand drive and has a close ratio dogleg five-speed manual transmission and no sunroof. It does have AC, but it has a rather basic control system. As originally built, one could switch it on or off, and one could control fan speed. But the system was preset to a temperature without a control and the console/dash was exactly like yours with only an on/off switch for the AC added. In inspecting the system I found there was actually a variable resistor in the controls that would control temperature but it was never mounted so it would be readily accessible. Go figure....\nOne thing that continues to amaze me, is the different driving characteristics of the two cars. It is not only the dogleg that makes the difference but the differences between the e28 chassis and front end in the 1980 model, and the e34 chassis and front end in the 1985 model make for different drivers. But both are great and I trust they will be with me for a long time.\nOne rather interesting difference between your and my car is mine has a dual brake booster system.\nJust one quick question: Is there any play in the steering system?\nYou have done a beautiful job on this car. In my case, @DEnnisLJacob, I have done a lot of work as well, much more than the car is likely worth. But it was (and remains) a labor of love rather than an investment decision. Some owners thought that a few early E12 cars like mine were fitted from the factory with the E9 C-pillar roundel others thought it was a previous owner that added them. I'm thinking it might have been a previous owner (who knows?). I do know they have been on the car for a VERY long time, I think fitted to the car while it was still in Europe before being imported to the U.S. I think they look great actually and kind of a neat homage to the older brother E9. When I had the car recently painted I had the option to remove them and chose to keep them for that same reason. \r\n\r\nThey are genuine OEM E9 Roundels and so are drilled into the C-pillar, they have a threaded stud and nut that attaches it to the C-pillar from the inside. Removal means that you have to remove the interior fabric to gain access to the backing nut and then you will be left with a M6 sized hole on the C-pillar....as these are not glued on. I would like to credit tschultz from Bimmerworld for this really informative narrative and also @BVillet (thank-you!). It helps explain the importance of the early Euro 635 cars fitted with the very desirable M90 Engines, Getrag gearboxes and more aggressive rear end ratio. Please note I have removed some sections to keep the focus on the early Euro 635 cars and the M90 engines.\n\n\"The M90 was used as a test platform for the daring overbore modifications going from the standard 92 x 86 (8:1,\u00a0180bhp@5400\u00a0214ftlbs@4000) to the 93.4 x 84 (9.3:1,\u00a0218bhp@5200\u00a0224ftlbs@4000).\n\nThe engine is known to rev more readily than any typical M30, and a large part of this is the torque down low-- rumor is that it makes 191-ft.lb at only 2000rpm.\n\nYou have to remember the context of the engine. It was offered initially in E24's starting in 1978. As I understand, it was the test horse while BMW were working on engine variants. They overbored the standard M30 3.5 and shortened the stroke (many people point to Paul Rosche). Later were additional modifactions such as the M88/1, M88/3 (dohc with the M90 block). The street M1 came out in 1978 as well, but has a difference, wet sump vs dry sump (along with dohc).\n\nSo in 1978, the hottest car you could buy from BMW besides the M1, was the 635 with the M90. BMW went ahead and stuck the M90 in the E12 M535i with the same dogleg gearbox, brakes, 3.07 LSD to get the first front engined M car-- the E12 M535i. All this power offered on L-jet injection, not even motronic!\nRemember, it wasn't until 1979 that the E23 745i turbo was offered, but it's also 3600lbs. Furthermore, the M635CSi wasn't offered until 1984. Somebody could have had a hot sport coupe (M90) for 5-6 years by that point! \n\nThe head is similar to a M30B34 head, and the cam is the same as a M30B35 (but the part number is different). Also the standard 135mm rods as I understand.\n\nThe M90 is a bored/stroked M30 that gets different running characteristics. The block is the same as the M88, however an M88 uses different pistons and then obviously the different head.\n\nDuring the beginning stages of the development of the M1 the idea was to have a company other than BMW develop and produce the engine. There were plans for 8 and even 10 cylinder engines. It was relatively late in the development process that the decision was made to use a BMW straight 6 power plant.\u00a0The starting point for the development of the M1 engine (internally designated as the M88) was the motor of the 635 CSi. At that point in time this unit (the M90) was the most powerful engine available within BMW. The M90 had been around for about 10 years but BMW\u2019s engine guru Paul Rosche had a lot of work to do before the motor was ready to be used in the M1. \n\nThe M90 was the first road going BMW engine with 3.5 litre\u00a0displacement. Originally this engine was used to test if the M88 engine was reliable with the narrow web spacing of 6.6mm. This means that this engine has exactly the same bore and stroke as the M88 and is directly related. However instead of a DOHC cylinder head with 24 valves, BMW used the SOHC cylinder head with 12 valves. The use of an electronically controlled fuel management system (Bosch LE-Jetronic) allowed a slightly higher compression of 9.3:1. Strictly, the M90 engine is not an M production engine although the E12 ///M535I in which it is used is a real M car. Until 1981, the M90 engine was used for the early 635CSI and the very rare and delectable E12 ///M535I from 1980.\n\nIn 1981 and 1982, Alpina used the last batch of the M90 engine to power the last versions of the B7 turbo versions of the E12 sedan and E24 coupe. For the B7S turbo, the M90 has been modified extensively to allow the use of a turbocharger. The B7S delivered 330hp @ 5800RPM and 500nm @3000RPM. During 1981 and 1982, Alpina only made 60 E12 sedans and 30 E24 coupe's in the B7S version.\n\nI hope this helps. I REALLY like car. I live in Houston. I contacted the seller (who is a classic touch every bolt-engineer-car-type). He showed me the car and I have to say (having owned 50 cars myself) it was virtually perfect. The seat leather was very similar to the upgraded napa leather in my BMW 550 (an expensive option), and flawless. The engine compartment you could eat off. All the plastic bits that rot and go bad in cars of this vintage are new. The bolts are new. The power-coating is exactly what it should be. (the pictures of this car do NOT do it justice. \r\nBut the money, the beauty of this car shines when it is moving. Driving the car is just kick-ass (we are in Texas). The motor sings and pulls and revs flawlessly to redline. Never got hot even driving it hard. What did surprise me was the suspension. I expected a classic hard, over taught coil-over ride. You know where your teeth chatter changing lanes on the freeway. But not so. Not at all!! Firm, controlled, but also elegant and graceful. I don't know how he set this up, but I liked that perhaps most of all. An no squeaks in the body. The wheels, about which I was initially ambivalent about from the pics (I like shinny center caps), in person, look great on this car. They are not the low profile and lowered you see on a lot of these cars that, to me, just doesn't look right. These are just right. I'm not sure how I feel about the body colored wheel wells (I'm just used to black), but I doubt I would change them if I owned the car. They are MUCH more evident in the pics than in person, and the reason for them is the right one (part of a COMPLETE redo). And, btw, ZERO rust. None. (plus the exact history you want this car to have CA, AZ, TX)\r\nBad: the tint is really dark. Bad: it doesn't have AC. \r\nBut tint can be changed and AC isn't hard to add (and should).\r\n\r\nAll in all, having been wanting an older 6 and watching them for some time, this is the one that will get away by which I will measure all others (even the more common M6s).
