There is a long standing tradition of white wall tires on sports cars, especially British cars, but also including many Italian and at least one Spanish car, the Pegaso. When I was restoring my Pegaso, we purchased a pair of white wall tires and mounted them to one side of the car. We then observed the car with both black and white wall tires and decided almost immediately that the car absolutely had to have white wall tires. \n\nWhile they might seem alarming visually, they are very much like the white cuffs of a sophisticated gentleman slightly peeking out from his sport coat, with a glint of cufflink (knockoff) to capture the eye. For 19 years owned a DB4 Series 111 convertible in the UK. Reg 571 HYP. Purchased from RS Williams, who was rebuilding her. Work was at the point of painting, and so with his input I chose the only metallic color AM apparently offered for that model, think it was called Sky Blue...Every young couple wanted my car to ferry them from church to reception. She mostly lived in London, but when parking at the Cafe de Paris in Monaco, or the Carlton, Cannes, the concierges would keep the front door.... Move over Bond... \r\nOh the memories. On many occasions, as alluded, she was the drive to a home in the South of France. So, for anyone looking for a special drive in a classic, from Chateauneuf de Grasse in the Cote d'Azur to Calais, France without using any Freeways (Autoroutes) here is some thoughts:- \r\nTypically from Chateauneuf de Grasse, used Route Napoleon, D1075 to Bourg en Bresse, then D996 to Louhans, this meant using the Peripherique around Dijon back on the 996 on the other side. Pick up D396 which is actually a continuation of the 996 to Vitry le Francois. The D2 to Chalons en Champagne. Then D944 to Reims. D966 (turns back into D1044)from Reims, Berry au Bac, Laon, Saint Quentin, and 1044 turns into D644 to Cambrai. Then D939 to Arras, D937 to Bethune and D943 to Calais. Today would probably hop on the autoroute at Reims due to vehicle congestion in the North.\r\nPlease while enroute, only stay in Logis de France (auberges). They are family run establishments, many very charming, some rather basic. Most offer excellent food, some beds like a canoe. Years ago there was only a book, with the 1,2,or 3 Chimneys to go by. Today you can check them out on the internet, so much easier and more information as well as photos. \r\nSometimes the route was varied, say to take in Epernay ( No explanation necessary). Once drove the whole trip back to London in the DB4 in a day, Left Grasse at 5am, in London around midnight. Even took a \"short cut\" (Not) going via the Col de Tende into Italy. Only stopped for coffees and baguette sandwiches... Madness. Would not advise trying it today, in a DB4, or any other classic for that matter. \r\nThe DB4 has gone to new pastures, there is a V12 E roadster and a Bentley. Have done the trip in the E. The power steering, suspension and a V12 makes a difference. Unfortunately don't know if there will be many drives like the old single man days, as my wife gets car sick, and there is a seven year old. So now long trips when in France are mostly in the Beast (Flying Spur). Not quite the same, she eats the road, bumps and bends, and anything else in the way. Not quite the same sensation as the old days.... But still a twinkle lingers in the eye, with 550+ hp while the Mrs and little one are asleep in the backseat bedroom .... \r\nAh this DB, I hope she continues to receive the same love and care I lavished on mine.... Oh, and the cost of my DB4 convertible from Richard Williams.... UK pounds 14,500 around 1980, sold her for Pounds 50,000 nineteen years later....
