(The front-engine Lamborghinis from the late '60s and early '70s are the worst for this.) I don't think the Italian driving position has anything to do with racing. If you ever have the opportunity to drive with an Italian in Italy with an Italian car from the late '50s through the '80s, watch how they use the steering wheel. They only grip the bottom of it and pass it through their hands as they drive the car -- all the while driving like mad and yelling like crazy! That's why the wheel is canted with the top so far and the bottom so close (like on a bus).
