A percentage of B20 engines had \"soft\" piston rings. They would wear a bit too much, thusly requiring an \"in the bed\" overhaul. Cylinders won't wear, and the bottom end (bearings) just won't wear out in these engines so there is no need to do an overhaul-just hone and replace the rings. Since you have to take the connecting rods out to do this, good practice suggests replacing the rod bearings. I kept a few of the old bearings and frankly, I wouldn't be afraid to reuse them-they just won't wear out. Also a valve job is good practice at that point and that is an opportunity to address the lower compression 1973 cly head. I did all this because I am getting older, and wanted to head off any future problems. Getting the pan off in the chassis requires a \"special touch\". The pedals is probably the most difficult to source, but can be purchased from a few 1800 breakers. We sourced the set I used from p1800.com in Mass (I won't mention the cost as this was over 10 years ago and likely not accurate). If you want to make the car look original, you will also need to source the column mounted O/D switch and matching trim part. The green O/D light as well as various parts like the clutch cable and transmission mount. \n\nActual installation is straightforward - unbolt the automatic bits, bolt-in the manual bits. The wiring isn't hard. Just follow the factory wiring diagram. I re-purposed some of the automatic wiring so it looks somewhat original under the hood.\n\nThe automatic cars have a taller rear end ratio than the manual cars. There is a lot of debate in the 1800 enthusiast circles on whether converting is worth the effort. We left the rear alone and actually prefer it for the more relaxed highway cruising. Some off-the-line acceleration is lost, but these cars were never rockets off the line in the first place. Especially 72/73 models with the low-compression B20F engine. \n\nI really love the 1800.
