The main longitudinal member of the chassis bends upward at the front of the engine bay, runs diagonally up to pick up the rear shock mount. The battery is above and just aft of this bend. Any acid that leaks mixes with rain or other water, and drips down onto this longitudinal and pools at the bend. (Especially when the drains there are plugged, which seems to happen quite easily.) This results in rust, in a fairly important part of the chassis.\r\n\r\nThis is a relatively common problem, and if it is bad enough fixing it properly can be a very involved process. Hence the \"hell hole\" nickname.\r\n\r\nThe acid can also seep in between the layers of sheet metal that make up the inboard suspension mounting \"ear\" for the right-side trailing arm. The only real bummer on them is the tail shifter, but that can be remedied. If this car were Willow Green or Adriatic Blue I'd seriously be considering putting in a bid. But, and a big BUT, I'd never pony up for a 914 without seeing the condition of the longitudinals under the rocker covers.
