I present \"Mattisse.\" Joining the herd in 2011 to replace a heavily modified E36/7 2.8 Roadster, the M Roadster has been fastidiously maintained. Exclusively serviced at Korman BMW with practically an open checkbook (roughly $28k in 7 years), this car will not disappoint. All of the typical Z3 issues have been addressed including the subframe reinforcement, glovebox, etc. This is a thoroughly sorted, no excuses car maintained by one of the best BMW shops in the country (it's even featured in one of their recent ads Pg 75 of the June Roundel, I'll upload a pic if I can).\r\n\r\nWhen they bought it, the car had not been loved by a collector and was kept outdoors. The leather was showing signs of sun damage and the paint wasn't up to my dad's standards. They followed Korman's recommendation and had the car fully painted & seats completely redone. Other than a few minor paint chips, the car now looks like it has less than 20k miles on it. \r\n\r\nMattisse has shared a garage with good company, but unfortunately space is now getting pinched by the most recent acquisition. As you can tell via the carfax mileage, he's just not getting the exercise & attention he deserves (an E30 M3 Evo has taken on that role).\r\n\r\nWe're happy to coordinate pickup or shipping to best accommodate the new caretaker. What a great car. I was concerned that with the M sitting 1.1 inches lower than a regular Z3, our lousy OK roads would turn joyrides into punishment. Thankfully, this is not the case - it is surprisingly comfortable considering how it handles corners. The gearing is low - even 5th - and with the torque it makes, it is extremely responsive. You just point and squirt past traffic. I thought I read somewhere that in 98 this was the fastest-accelerating BMW in the American market (0-60 5.4). The M3 brakes are excellent as well. I had fun taking family members charging fast towards a four-way stop, long after you would normally start braking, then hit the brakes and still stop well short of the intersection (rural roads - I don't want other drivers to freak out). No drama, deceleration like you've driven into a pile of sand. The nice thing about this particular car is that the sub-frame issue won't come up, and the standard annoying broken interior items have been replaced - the seat belt guides, and the trim panel around the seat heater and A/C buttons. If the cooling fan wasn't replaced during the system refresh, it is only a few dollars and is easy to replace - but you must do it to avoid it the crispy plastic from coming apart and slicing up the radiator and other fragile parts. As 02Coastie mentioned, parts of the radiator (the top and bottom tanks) are also plastic, and they can develop slow leaks where they are crimped by metal clamps to the metal core. \n\nSo it's completely normal to eventually replace weak plastic parts in the cooling system. There are aftermarket all-metal water pumps and thermostat housings available, and I have used them in my own E36 M3 with excellent results. I think nobody should replace those parts with another plastic part, especially since metal replacements don't cost much. Sorry, that was a rabbit hole. He refused medical treatment at the scene and as far as I'm aware, he is ok. Was ok at the scene.\r\n\r\nLong and short, I'm an M Roady and M Coupe lover.\r\n\r\nI write to advise any potential bidder that:\r\n\r\n1. These cars are the most affordable and best fun per M dollar on the road and economy numbers are a zillion giggles and smiles / $.\r\n\r\n2. If you're going to track it, the convertibles need a front strut bar but nothing else and with that in place to tighten up your turn in, they are great track cars completely stock (even if you don't track it, you can drive it on Saturdays and tell your friends it is a legendary track car...).\r\n\r\n3. On this car, Estoril Blue is the only colour to desire.\r\n\r\n4. Preventative installation of a subframe re-inforcement kit on these cars is the sign of a fastidious owner. No-one should question this. Stop it. Accept that this means Good Owner.\r\n\r\n5. Preventative replacement of the cooling components on this model is the sign of a fastidious owner with a good mechanic and an open chequebook, which should be every bidders wet dream.\r\n\r\n6. Replacement of the speakers is simply a mercy mission. The Z3's have a lot to love, but to call the stock speakers audio equipment is tantamount to calling MacDonalds's food. They are horrific. Replacement is essential\r\n\r\nFrom a review of the listing, the ONLY thing wrong with this car is that the convertible top is black rather than blue.\r\n\r\nI strongly encourage purchase of one for good and one for driving.\r\n\r\nBest regards. The experts have spoken, but having owned a 99 M3 for many years, can speak to a couple of points.\r\n\r\nLet me second (or third, fourth) the comments re the S52 engine. I now own an 06, so can compare directly against the S54. The S52, too often derided still as \"not a real M engine,\" is arguable better suited for American roads than any other M engine for reasons already explained. And if you really want to avoid the high RPM trail off, you can do a M50 mainfold and some other things. Reference a recent Roadster auction where this was discussed in depth. \r\n\r\nMaintenance - in addition to not requiring valve adjustment, certain items like PS reservoir and 02 sensors are much easier to access on the S52. \r\n\r\nAudio - not up on Roadster esoterica to know exactly what head unit this car came with, read mention of the CD33 that came in my car. The sound quality was demonstrably improved by swapping in the more powerful CD43 Business unit. Much louder and clearer, exact fit, and being BMW unit looks totally stock. Also, replaced my midranges with exact fit BSW replacements, again noticeable difference. And I'm no audiophile. \r\n\r\nThink that's all I can comment to first-hand.
