This one checks a lot of boxes in that respect. Personally I like the look of the S4 versus the S6 (and I have a 95' S6) as well. All the parts are readily available (despite what you may hear) though not through a dealer as they are NLA. \r\n\r\nThe engine (if maintained) is usually bulletproof and routinely get 250k miles out of them with little work. Like any car, proper preventative maintenance is key and though these cars have their issues, the hard ones usually involve water intrusion leaking from various places under the cowl and so forth. \r\n\r\nA stock S4 that receives regular maintenance is a genuinely uber-reliable ride. There are the occasional electrical gremlins, but compared to models after 05'-ish seem relatively easy to troubleshoot and its usually a malfunctioning relay, switch, or module. Window regulators are common fail points, as are sunroof switches and cassette assemblies, but no more so than other German cars of this era. \r\n\r\nItems that are considered \"hard\" to find are bumper assemblies and S4/S6 specific trim bits (though the carbon fiber bits on this look fantastic! Seats usually wear horribly (again a real plus on this one) and cost a fortune to reupholster properly given the complexity of the seat. They are perhaps some of the best seats ever fitted to a sedan IMO!!!\r\n\r\nYou'll want to do the usual, flush out the old brake fluid, coolant, oil service, check for oil leaks around the timing case, worn hoses, and wire connections for corrosion. The shifter should be smooth, no notchy engagement and so on. \r\n\r\nMIne was a 1 owner with (low mileage!) about 164k on it and I am doing a refurbishment that originally was going to be just a repaint (faded black) and basic mechanical upgrades (such as the 2.0 E34 coil packs on this one) including replacing torn axle boots, new clutch, flywheel, refinishing the original FUCHS wheels (wider versus the 95' stock Avus ones) and some suspension work. It has now expanded into a complete interior swap from Ecru to black, headliner replacement, sunroof work (still diagnosing), new calipers, pads, and rotors, and the list goes on. For all that work, the engine purrs like new and I have no electrical gremlins!!! The biggest potential problem is with the first gear chipping a tooth, but that's usually only a problem if someones been stop light drag racing. \r\n\r\nThe only thing I can think of that could leave you stranded is the power output stages. Really a non-issue if you keep a spare in the trunk.\r\n\r\nAll in all, these are great cars. They are begging for a set of legit snow tires to do them justice. Under the hood, the intact airbox cover is a nice touch that jumped out at me as well. This car looks about as clean as the 11k-mile tornado-red time capsule that sold here recently for a major premium and, unlike that one, this example appears to have a rust-free undercarriage. \r\n\r\nThere\u2019s plenty of Colorado authenticity on display here. The license-plate frame from Prestige Imports looks original to the car. So does the seven-character license plate with embossed mountainscape. Those haven\u2019t been issued since \u201999. \r\n\r\nSome of the pics appear to be taken at Dart Auto, which is one of many legit Audi shops in Denver. (Side note about pics: the action shot of the headlight washers is amazing.) And if I\u2019m reading the paperwork here correctly, the seller (or someone in his family?) is/was a tech who worked on the car prior to owning it himself. Very nice.\r\n\r\nAll this adds up to a fantastic example that deserves to be owned by a knowledgeable enthusiast. It seemed like every other car in '93 was Emerald over Ecru. The problem with the Emerald paint on these cars (as well as pearl) was that the clear coat would start crazing (tiny cracks) if you didn't take exceptional car of the finish with washing/waxing. The good news is that this car looks to be in really nice condition inside and out so whoever buys it has a good starting point it seems. This is one of 82 cars that were sold in the U.S. in the Emerald / Anthracite color combination. There were 232 Emerald cars sold that year so you get an idea why the Emerald over Ecru combination is more common.\r\n\r\nThis particular car is a later '93 model which has the R134a A/C system. It is also equipped with the optional \"all season\" wheel and tire package which consisted of the six spoke 15\" Speedline made wheels. The buyer would most likely want to purchase a set of the original five spoke 16x8\" Fuchs forged wheels if you want to keep it proper and original. \r\n\r\nAs others have said, when these are well maintained they are remarkably reliable cars. We've been driving them since July of 1995 having owned five of them. Ya never know!\r\n\r\nI got my then 3 year old 1993 S4 (emerald green over ecru tan) from a dealer friend I met in the quattro club (I was the first quattro club member to go off the track at Watkins Glen, yea me. I drove it strong for over 10 years without any major problems, just routine maintenance, brakes, clutch and very minor issues. The car owed me nothing when I took it off the road. It had a long list of things that needed attention and I just kept putting it off. Oh, and it had started to rust, which it wasn't supposed to do, lol. \r\n\r\nGood luck with your beauty S4. Drive it hard on the dry, cautious on the wet, and drive it like a 2 wheel drive car on the snow and ice. You'll be fine, the car will take car of the rest. And don't be afraid to do some track events with it. You'll learn what the car is truly capable of and it'll make you a better driver.
