A 1940 Oldsmobile Series 60 Special Woodie Wagon\u2014Egyptian Ivory over gleaming varnished oak or maybe mahogany, riding on whitewalls wide as small town regret. There were only three left now, if the write up is correct. Fewer than the number of promises kept in a lifetime.\r\n\r\nI\u2019d seen one like it once. Not in a museum, not in a car show\u2014real life. Right here in Fort Stockton, 1962. A woman named Connie Jane pulled into the Piggly Wiggly lot behind the wheel of that wagon, and every kid in town knew it before the bell rang the next morning. Her hair was lacquered into place, her lipstick a shade the nuns at Our Lady of Immeasurable Concern disapproved of, and her Oldsmobile looked like something built to ferry saints across the desert.\r\n\r\nI never knew where she got it, or why she left it behind the bowling alley after the divorce, but I saw it rot through a decade of rain. The varnish flaked first. Then the metal rusted, and finally, the bowed wood roof caved. They said she\u2019d moved to New Orleans with a blues guitarist who\u2019d played at the Lucky Lady Lounge. I like to think she drove the wagon there. But that\u2019s probably not true. Beautiful things rarely go out with the dignity they deserve.\r\n\r\nLucinda refilled the cup again without asking. She knew when I needed more and when I\u2019d had enough\u2014same way she knew not to talk over a man lost in thoughts older than he was.\r\n\r\nOldsmobile\u2019s gone now. Packed it in when they realized the world didn\u2019t need a middle child anymore. Wagons, too\u2014wood-bodies vanished when fiberglass proved you could fake it cheaper. But what nobody tells you is that wood remembers. It holds heat and ghosts in equal measure. That Olds on the iPad? You could smell summer on its door panels, like warm pine needles and salt air. It wasn\u2019t just transportation. It was a time machine made from trees and chrome.\r\n\r\nWhen we traded beauty for convenience, something slipped through the cracks.
