The later Testastretta's have a removable one piece valve cover unlike this engine which has separate covers to access inlet and exhaust rocker arms for inspection. I work on a lot of these and this is as sweet a one as I've seen in a while. Probably never having had it's valves adjusted ( first scheduled adjustment is at 6K miles) there is a strong chance that it will have flaking chrome on one or more of the opening rocker arms ( an issue at the time). If it hasn't had belts recently that would be excellent insurance. Mileage was mid-20's before selling it to a friend. A few people have asked about maintenance records and I have to echo that -- valve shims have to be checked periodically, especially early in the bike's life. The interval is 6k to 8k (I don't recall exactly) and most Duc mechanics will suggest a new belt at every other shim check. I also suspect the chain & sprockets should be replaced at this point. Since the service records come with the bike, my suggestion to seller is upload them to this listing.\r\n\r\nSomeone else mentioned suspension -- my ST3 was horribly under-sprung, and I'm not that big a guy. I had a spring put in the rear for a 200# rider that turned out adequate for two up riding. I had the forks re-sprung and upped the fluid weight twice until they were sporty enough, considering the Showa forks on an ST3 are not adjustable. I had thought the ST4 came with adjustable forks but there isn't a decent pic of the fork tops here to know if I am correct. But the Ohlins shock in the rear I think is the best in the business.\r\n\r\nNone of the \"enhancements\" on this bike bother me. The footpeg adjusters look to be five minutes to remove if you want to go back to the stock location. If someone wants to go back to stock risers, just need the originals and 20 minutes or so. I never rode a Ducati out of the showroom with stock exhaust, so I would recommend against swapping back to stock mufflers. The Sargent seat is definitely an improvement over OEM, in my opinion.\r\n\r\nI saw someone take one of these out during a track day at Mid-Ohio. DNA sent me to the factory in Bologna for a tour in spring of 2002. Also got tix to the WSBK round at San Marino. Life was grand!\n\nThe tour was swell although that day was Italy vs S Korea in the World Cup. It was all over the factory on tv, basically no work was happening. Everyone was drinking wine and basically weeping as Italy lost 2-1. This gave me an excellent opportunity to sneak behind the red door that said \u201cCorse. Do not enter\u201d. I got maybe 5 minutes in heaven before being escorted back to the main floor. \n\nThe real highlight for me however was taking delivery of a new ST4S at the factory and blazing all around Bologna and the surrounding area for about 5 days. I remember an ornery group of brits on an organized group day ride that of course included a 3 hour 7 course lunch break. These fine chaps rode shiny new Yamaha 600cc race-replica models and they would endlessly say \u201cahh-six... pure-sex\u201d before bursting into laughter. \n\nThese guys could ride though. As could many of the Europeans in our group. I was 2-up that day on the mighty ST dicing with these crazed hooligans in the mountains of Tuscany. The Superbike bodywork/tank design is a model of simplicity and elegance. Every bike ever made should be like that. Stripping one of those to the bare bones is actually enjoyable and takes about 20 minutes assuming you take a Chianti break.\n\nThe ST of course has all that fiddly bodywork in the way that has to come off and put back on. (for most, not a DIY exercise), and the belts need periodic replacement (which is a more reasonable DIY undertaking). Contemporary belt construction is such, that if IIRC, frequency of belt changes have effectively been halved. It does have a dry clutch, but not difficult to to service with correct tools - easier than that wet clutches IMO. Beyond this, its really no different than any other modern motorcycle; oil/filter (spin on), tires, brake pads, spark plugs, the occasional battery, and every few years, coolant.\n\nAgain - with the right suspension setup and appropriate tires, these are a real joy to exercise in the twisties - even two-up. Ducati really got fueling right on bikes of this period. I loved the bike and racked up the miles. The bike never once let me down. Other than belts and valve check/adjustments its was solid as a rock. I made a LOT of modifications to make sure it was that way, including voltage regulator and associated parts, IIRC the PO of my bike also upgraded much of the wiring. I replaced the clutch slave cylinder, Ohlins internals in the forks, stiffer Spring in the real Ohlins shock, better front rotors, same exhaust set up as this one, many CF pieces and the same Sargent seat. My biggest issue was night vision. The factory lighting was so poor you\u2019d outrun it at 40 mph. I also did the Ducati Designs upgrade that this bike has and it\u2019s an excellent upgrade. To the new owner, I highly suggest the Ohlins fork internals and matching the spring on the Ohlins rear shock. Those two really transformed the way this bike handles, from good to really great. I also preferred a set of performance tires as opposed to more touring tires, although you do give up some tire life, if that\u2019s important. I changed the final drive, adding a few teeth to the rear and a lighter weight aftermarket chain and sprocket set. More aggressive front pads and Gafler wave rotors really sharpened up the brakes too. I am sure there are other things I added over the years which I have forgotten but these are really excellent sports tourers with emphasis on the sporting side. At 6\u20193\u201d I had the same peg extensions, bar risers and windscreen. That set up created a nice comfortable ride at 70 to 80 mph on the highway and still let me tuck comfortably for more aggressive riding. \r\n\r\nWith regards to the endless number of well nuts on the fairings, I did the same as @fstntq and switched over to dzus fasteners. Also Desmo Times makes or used to make, a set up which allowed you to remove the lower part of the fairing where there is already a seem that\u2019s fastened together without having to remove the upper part of the fairing. That made for much quicker oil changes and access to areas you need. I know some of the aftermarket parts are pretty much dried up so you\u2019re stuck with only Ducati parts these days. Desmo Times is a valuable resource on these ST bikes. \r\n\r\nGood Looking ST4S I am sure the new owner will enjoy it. The difference between the STs and the 916/996 is the hugely different time to get the bodywork etc off/on, Tamburini made it really easy on the Superbikes, whereas the 8V engine is shoehorned in the ST chassis and the bodywork was designed with no common sense: for example battery maintenance first involves removing the the inner fairing and mirrors, and so it goes. Once you get the ST bodywork off, you need to drain the cooling system, remove the radiator, battery and battery box, throttle body assembly etc to gain access. Once you learn the body work removal sequence it Is not hard, just very slow. Make sure you have spare rubber well nuts on hand as generally some are damaged and trying to reuse them when damaged is an exercise in frustration. The rear cam belt cover is a bit of a puzzle, because it has to be snaked out from behind the ST frame in a particular way. My recommendation for an ST4 6000 mike service would be to reserve two full working days and the right tools if you\u2019ve never done it before. If you want to remove rockers to the extent necessary to inspect for damaged chrome, that will take extra time. You can extract the rocker pins with a home made tool. Make sure you have magnet-on-stick to catch the half rings and it wouldn\u2019t hurt to have spare half rings on hand as they are sometimes found broken. Do not push the closers with a screwdriver to check opener clearance as there is a very good chance it will slip off and tear a valve stem seal.\n\nOther notes on this bike is that saddlebags and parts are unavailable so the damage on the unpainted plastic parts will require some resourceful searching for used parts. I found a set of used Nonfango bags and mixed parts to build one undamaged set. As I said, in my opinion the absolute best mod (other than the headlight) was the Ohlins internals for the forks and then having the suspension set up for my 210 pounds. That and a nice set of real performance rubber really made the bike a gem for me. Unfortunately I lowsided the bike back in 2015 and it was totaled. All the gear all the time, so I walked away unharmed. Picked up a 15 Tuono. Although it's a more modern bike with all the newer goodies and power, I still miss my old ST4S. Its such a great all around performance bike. The only thing it didn't like was traffic. \r\n\r\nThe ST had it's quirks too, IIRC the rear higher was held on by 4 nuts. A Multi is more comfortable on long rides for me but I think most would agree it's too tall to be a true sport tourer. This bike defines the genre for Ducati. Whoever gets this bike should do the services as already discussed, check the tire dates and then ride for pleasure any time, anywhere. I don't know that the ST series will ever be collectible, but they'll always be desirable. You have to remove both the right side lower fairing and right side panel. In order to remove the side panel you must first remove the upper fairing because the upper mounting screws for the side panels are hidden and inaccessible until the upper fairing is removed. Many STs have broken side fairings from people desperately trying to remove the side panel without first removing the upper fairing, but it is necessary. In order to remove the upper fairing you must first remove the inner fairing liners and then the mirrors. \n\nYou can change the oil by removing only one fairing lower panel or both as an assembly, your choice, so oil changes aren\u2019t actually difficult.\n\nAnother interesting one is that the forward air box mounting screw can\u2019t be removed with the radiator in place, which (you guessed it) requires fairing removal. The good news is that the front mount can be modified to replace the screw with a rod, and the rear screw mounts hold it in place without issue.\n\nIn spite of all of the above, I choose my ST4 over my other eight bikes very often for long distance riding... because it\u2019s very nice to ride.
