Drama sells.\u201d\r\n\r\nHe wasn\u2019t wrong. The Lincoln was lean and mean, the kind of car a man drove when he wanted folks to guess which side of the law he was on. Kennedy was in the White House, and this looked like something the Secret Service would crawl all over. Denton liked that. He also liked the idea of intimidating strangers without saying a word.\r\n\r\nBut then the salesman said something about \u201ca gentleman\u2019s sedan,\u201d and Denton suddenly felt itchy in his own skin.\r\n\r\nHe headed east across town to Tumbleweed Chrysler-Plymouth-Imperial, where the Imperial stood like an over-decorated aunt trying to hide her age behind pearls and perfume. It had gunsight taillights, stainless steel roof trim, and enough chrome to blind a bishop. The showroom smelled like Aqua Net and desperation.\r\n\r\n\u201cNow this is prestige,\u201d crooned the salesman, a portly fellow named Chuck who used cologne like other men used guilt.\r\n\r\nDenton slid behind the wheel of the ivory four-door. The dash was sculpted like a spaceship. Push-button transmission. Power everything. If the Lincoln was quiet confidence, the Imperial was a showgirl who knew she still had it and didn\u2019t care who disapproved.\r\n\r\n\"Steering wheel feels like it should launch me into orbit,\u201d Denton said.\r\n\r\nChuck chuckled too hard. \u201cYou\u2019ll be the only man in West Texas with one. These are built for men with presence. And mistresses.\u201d\r\n\r\nDenton didn't correct him. He was between mistresses and considering a wife, which in 1961 was as dangerous a proposition as buying an Imperial in cattle country.\r\n\r\nHe lit another cigarette with the car's built-in lighter, rolled down the window, and left the showroom without saying goodbye.\r\n\r\nFinally, he rolled into Oil Patch Cadillac-John Deere, where the Cadillac DeVille waited like a country club invitation in automotive form. Blue over blue, it looked as if it had been carved from a glacier and dipped in bourbon.\r\n\r\nInside, the seats cradled him like sin. A salesman named Mason\u2014no tie, wide smile\u2014leaned in the window and said, \u201cBet it\u2019s been a hell of a week.\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cIt\u2019s always a hell of a week,\u201d Denton said. \u201cAnd now I\u2019ve got to pick the right kind of mistake to drive into next Monday.\u201d\r\n\r\nMason laughed. \u201cDeVille\u2019s the kind of mistake folks will forgive you for. Besides, women love it. They say the fins remind them of promises.\u201d\r\n\r\nPromises. Denton looked out across the prairie. Kennedy was talking about a New Frontier. Women were just beginning to talk back. Everything was changing\u2014faster than some folks liked. But the cars?
