Have the trailing arms been reenforced around the bearing carrier? (Notorious failure spot for Rally 510 arms.) They crack around the bearing hub and in time the wheel begins to toe out, eventually separating from the car at speed, if you ignore the fact that the car won\u2019t go in a straight line! How is the Brake bias valve reached if you\u2019re strapped in tightly? Requisite hand brake for quick turns or mid corner corrections. Nice. A fuel cell would be an early upgrade for the buyer. Although the stock tank location was always perfect. Nissan did some very cool engineering along those lines. Where did the oil filter get moved to?\nWhat struts are you using? 710\u2019s or ZX? Are the shocks valvable? \nThe shell looks to be in good shape. No cracks below the rear window. Tell tale signs of a long used rally 510. \nAlthough not super competitive in GR-2 currently, it could be upgraded in power and brakes to be made so. ZX trans and R-190 can handle 200+HP if not abused. The radiator looks large enough to cool 11:1 or more. Cooling is critical above 150HP and 10:1. I ran a Jeep Cherokee radiator in my car to keep it cool. It worked so well I had to block it for winter driving. \nThe cage looks to be well done and looks to meet current RA, NASA spec. I don\u2019t see any pics that show if the shell has been \u201cstitched\u201d. Has it? Although the the battery placement consistent with 510 builds.... I\u2019d move it inside immediately upon acquisition of the car. Unless you\u2019re using Odessey or other dry cell battery. The floor WILL fail under the weight of a Lead/Acid unit. You\u2019ll be able to read a newspaper through the cracks after a year of campaigning. Once the floor sags it\u2019s all downhill for the trunk area. Move the Cool Shirt cooler, and put the battery there. You accomplish 2 things. Saving the floor and moving the weight between the \u201caxles\u201d. \nIf anyone has any questions about rallying a 510 feel free to ask. Thanks for taking the time to look at and comment on my auction. \r\n\r\n@Stagehand Thanks for chiming in with your invaluable 510 rally experience. I am not the builder of the car, so I will have to answer with what I recall from the previous owner who last rallied the car, and from what I can see on the car based on my 510 and Datsun ownership experience (this is my third 510 and eighth Datsun). So let's see if I can answer your questions.\r\n\r\nThe engine was redone by the previous owner, and remains in mostly stock configuration. The bottom and top end were rebuilt, but the compression was not raised, so it still runs on regular (poor quality) CA 91 octane. It has a mild Comp Cam, oil spray bar, modified sump, and high capacity oil pump. The oil filter is in the stock location, and although the bracket is there for a repositioned filter housing, it isn't being used. He was running a high strung Rebello motor previously, but he changed to this mild spec L20B, to have more reliability and not require the use of race gas. He was all about not DNFing and completing stages. I honestly don't know the numbers, but I wouldn't imagine it to be much different than a similar L20B with a cam and side drafts. Upside is that the engine remains very streetable and takes pump gas. \r\n\r\nI love the roof vents. They cool the cabin surprisingly well, as they seem to direct fresh air right down on top of you. I was also told they work well in keeping the cabin pressurized to help prevent dust/dirt/fumes from getting in. \r\n\r\nI believe the drum cooler intakes and drilled vents are from the car's road racing days. Having looked through all the \"5 & Dime\" issues included with the sale, I can see that some of the neat tech article tips and tricks have been done to the car, like venting the rear drums, poly mounting the transmission, converting the headlights to separate relays and utilizing BMW E30 high beams, etc. I will have to check on the reinforcement of the bearing carrier on the rear arms though. The car comes with a spare pair of trailing arms that you could have reinforced for replacements, but obviously it would be nice to have the ones on the car similarly reinforced as well. \r\n\r\nFunny thing is, I also thought that red radial knob was the brake bias control, but it is actually the kill switch. You just slap it to kill the power, and twist to turn it back on. The hydraulic handbrake is a hoot, and it is great that the factory parking brake is still functional (spare included).\r\n\r\nAs you mentioned, the factory location is great for protecting the gas tank and weight balance, so that is why, so I have been told, that it was never changed to a fuel cell setup. I do like the safety of a fuel cell, and it certainly can still be done if the next owner wished. Nice thing about the factory setup is that you can fill it up without getting fumes into the cabin or opening the trunk. I remember seeing photos of some Safari 510's with custom fuel cells in the stock tank's location with an auxiliary tank on the side for long distance driving - very trick! \r\n\r\nThe front shocks are for a ZX, as is the whole strut assembly and brakes. They are 5-way adjustable, and the rears have been custom valved by Brett Norgaard at Bilstein for the spring rates in back. \r\n\r\nThe shell is in fantastic condition. It evidences how well the car was maintained and loved though out its life. I tried to take photos to show that all the factory panel joints look to be original, are present, and aren't bondo'd over or hideously welded from poor repairs. While it is a rally car, and has been for a long time, if the car did have extensive repairs done, they were done right. The chassis is not seam/stitch welded, but it feels really rigid, most likely due to the extensive roll cage. \r\n\r\nI agree that the battery can be moved into the inside of the cabin, and it would be a better location for it. For gravel driving, you would want to run the set of wheels with Hankook gravel tires, and take off the front sway bar (running a rear bar is driver preference). The engine in its current form is putting out approximately 125-130 HP depending on piston choice. If it has flat tops the CR is approximately 9-9.5:1. I ran a Rebello 2 liter in my Rally 510 as well. It made just under 200HP on VP 114 and about 12:1. I still run the same engine in my Recce 510 which is also a DD. Retarded severely with octane boost she still pings if you romp it at low RPM. On tune that engine hauls ass! So much so we fried the stock brakes half way through the first stage in WA back in the day. I changed to Altima disc brakes in the rear and bigger ZX units with Scrocco calipers in the front just to slow the thing from warp speed. Dave (Rebello) punched my block to just under 2.1 liters. Many hours on the flow bench with the head. With 44 Mik\u2019s and big tube headers it sings! Speaking of headers. I\u2019d advise tacking 1\u201d angle iron on the exposed portions of the down tubes and the curve under the rear half shafts. It deflects material away from the tubes and protects them. \r\nAs far as wheels, I ran 14\u201d Mitsubishi Starion wheels. I bought every single one I could find. Being cast they were brittle and cracked if not looked after. Still have some of those laying around somewhere. If it were me and I wanted to campaign this car at the National level with a large engine. I\u2019d upfit 15\u2019s to get better tire choices. You\u2019ll have to stretch and flare the arches to make them fit. I had to run Michelin M-4\u2019s exclusively because there was no other choice. I went thru 4-6 every event because we spun the rubber off them every few stages. 15\u2019s have a larger contact patch and more choice in compound and tread patterns. \r\n\r\nI ran the stock tank throughout my years of campaigning the car. The weight and position were perfect in the stock configuration. I couldn\u2019t afford a cell anyway and it didn\u2019t make the car faster. All improvements went to making the car faster. Unfortunately safety was second on the list of priorities. I\u2019m still not convinced you\u2019d need one but I\u2019m more cautious than I was! \r\nThe roof vents do indeed pressurize the cockpit and eliminate dust. If I\u2019d known that back in the \u201870-80\u2019s I would have done it before the first event I ever ran! Dust was always an issue no matter how hard you tried to seal the car. Vents virtually eliminated that problem immediately. I got my vents out of a wrecked Mac sleeper. I put a set in my Sierra before the first event. I cringed when we cut the roof in the 510 until I ran them for the first time. Nice cool air and no dust inside!! I couldn\u2019t wait to hack into the roof on the Sierra! Those vents came from the foot wells of a Peterbilt 379 IIRC. The Mac vents were adjustable, the Pete vents were open or closed but nearly a pound lighter! Couple down sides of the Pete vents. \r\nOn the first event in the Sierra up in WA, on a straight away in the Shelton forest. It was raining so they were closed. We hit 100 almost exactly and the friggen vents came open! I crapped in my suit and nearly off\u2019d. From that point forward when we hit 100+, either me or depending how busy I was, my Co-driver had to hold the dam vents closed!! After annoying the hell out of us, I rolled up a hotel wash cloth I used to wipe my face between stages and shoved it between the roof and the vent stay. My buddy and I using wood and a bumper jack. Hammered and beat the thing pretty close into shape. The rest we filled with a gallon and a half of bondo. It was close enough for the chicks I dated and we were off to the races! We hack sawed some gates from.... well I\u2019d rather not say, for the then roll bar. Eventually we caged the rest in Metal shop in school. All I could afford was 1 Super Oscar but it was enough to learn to drive at night on the back roads of the SoCal desert. The politics behind the RA and ARA split is not relevant in this forum. The good news is we have more events to choose from where in the past it was very limited. NASA has been around for several years now and is more geared towards Grassroots. They don\u2019t allow sequential gear boxes for example, which helps limit the amounts spent to compete. Wise in my in my view although it will restrict my new team to ARA/RA events. My Escort is H pattern so I can still run with NASA in that car. \nARA is the new kid in town and as mentioned, taken several of the top National events, STPR being one of them. Some of the same names that were with RA are associated with ARA. Rallying in the US is a very small community, and mixing the gene pool is common. \n@PWS1205\nDrier vents were indeed the first roof vents to appear long ago. They were crude but effective and certainly cheap! I completely understood guys on a budget because I was one of them! I just wanted a more sanitary installation so I went with Sleeper vents. They also flowed much more air. \n@steveracer\nIf you\u2019ve rallied a 510 for any length of time, you\u2019ve had a buggered trailing arm. Like you, Ive had some hairball moments when one let loose at the wrong time. It\u2019s funny when it\u2019s happening you ignore the fact that the car is screamIng at you to stop or else! I just kept correcting the trajectory not wanting to give up road position. Eventually, when you hit the tipping point it\u2019s a Titanic event, and you\u2019re along for the ride with a front row seat to into the scenery!
