That was a throw away car back then, even in the 90s the would have been a cheap disposable car.\n\nBut there are some out there as crazy as it seems. Pre-Covid a friend of mine inherited his grandmothers big bumpered 1990 Jetta GL. Bone stock car, 1.8L 8V, 5 speed with working R12 a/c still. The car was purchased new by his grandparents in 1990 and only had 18K miles on it. They lived on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts and the car never left the island. 2017 it got towed to his shop in Northern NJ. At that point it been sitting for 7 years already in a garage. But the car was almost as clean as this Jetta appears visually. So there are people out there with low mileage, very clean cars that most of the world would have deemed a disposable car. \n\nHowever the car mechanically needed work. From sitting for so long, moisture eventually mixed in with the oil somehow and the crank and rod bearings were actually rusty. Car made zero oil pressure. The brake lines had rusty sludge water in them instead of brake fluid. The coolant was beyond useless and was eating the metal inside the system. All the rubber bushings were rotting away. The car looked mint but needed a full mechanical overhaul. Two door manual transmission. I put 77,000 miles on it in 13 months of ownership. I had a driving job going about 300 miles every evening. Loved that car. I'd run down to Florida for the weekend to party with my cousin. 1000 miles each way. 13 hours 10 minutes was my door to door record. So many great memories. I ran leaded regular fuel until the converter completely plugged up and then put a test pipe on it. The buyer got a great deal when I sold it. Car looked virtually brand new and I'd taken insane care of it changing the oil every few weeks! I had a really early (under 10,000 serial number Escort) and it was basically a license to speed in the days of Michigan State Troopers all running high power X-Band radar on all the time. I could spot those guys for miles and never got a ticket on the highway. I'd bury the 85mph speedo, keep my foot in it for another few seconds, and set the cruise. This was in the 55 speed limit days too. I put big snow tires on it in the winter and it would go pretty much anywhere. Good Lord what fun I had. Thanks for the memories!
