These engines were marvels of their time. Most people my age and younger (I am in my mid 40's) Mostly remember Buicks for their FWD blah cars from the late 80's forward with maybe a small nod to the Grand Nationals. Buick was actually a technological pioneer. Their adoption of the overhead valve engine was 20 years ahead of their time as well as being an early adopter of hydraulic lifters as well as the first to offer vacuum-operated spark advance (replacing the then common steering wheel mounted lever) as well as the first car to come with turn signals. \r\n\r\nI have driven several straight 8 Buicks and they pull like a freight train. To judge this by its contemporaries in the US with the exception of Nash \"Senior\" models were getting flatheads with technology that hadn't been updated since the 20's. By 49 people were getting V8 fever as post war most makes Buick included had OHV V8's on the drawing board and in 49 Oldsmobile would have their \"Rocket\" V8 to market followed in suit by the rest of the industry. The result of research into the high compression and better technology developed in the war. The compact packaging, lower weight and lest flex in the crankshaft that allowed higher RPM's would spell the demise of the straight 8 but nothing IMO compares to the smoothness and torque of these engines.\r\n\r\nI would just love to build a long deck short rear set cabin custom (maybe a very retro AMG GT) with this engine gleaming under the long hood.
