Since there were no women on post and drinks cost $.50 at the officers club, that left plenty of money for a new car. Most of my buddies were buying Mustangs or Impalas with the 409 or even Austin Healey 3000 and Sumbeam Tigers. \n\nBut not me.\n\nI had read an article in Car and Driver praising the Corvair Fitch Sprint as the best thing to come out of Detroit since the Duesenberg and as a self-proclaimed aesthete who was one shade too cool for a muscle car, I ordered a brand new Corvair Monza (how could a car named after a famous F1 track be anything but great?) and all the Fitch Sprint parts from my local Texas dealer and within a few weeks I had the coolest car on post. It was just like this one except maroon in color with a black interior and that distinctive Coby Whitmore designed fastback roof addition that he called a \u201cVentop\u201d. It had shortened steering arms and a steering damper, special shocks and brake shoes and the most glorious trombone exhaust pipes that looked like chrome pea shooters on each side of the car. It sounded better than any of the muscle cars at idle and sang like Pavarotti when wound up.\nWhen I was assigned to a post in Germany, I had my Corvair shipped over which if you think about it was bass ackward since the opportunity to buy a car over there and bring it back was one of the few perks of being a soldier in the \u201c60\u2019s. But it was one of the best decisions I have made in my car life. It absolutely was a star over there, outshining the 280 SL\u2019s and 911\u2019s and staying right with them until we hit the Autobahn, where they were kings. But on the twisties, and rumbling through the stone walled towns, it was the center of attention. And the best part was that I learned to drive properly like a German instead of an American. \n\nThen I was transferred to Viet Nam and the car was shipped back to my parents in Minneapolis where my dad grew tired of caring for it and sold it while I was still moldering in Chu Lai. It is the one new car I bought I wish I could have back. But it is better to have loved and lost they say than to never have loved at all. These Corvairs have a fully independent suspension with adjustment available for all four corners, actually a more sophisticated design than the BMW's even though it's 10 years older. They have a low CG. They are light though likely heavier than the 2002. These Corvairs are lots of fun to drive. Their drivetrain has a unique personality, not German, not American. More fun facts that you may already know: Top speed at Bonneville was run by Tom K. of Whittier CA at 156.9MPH in '67 or '68, Wayne Horning built the Wayne 100 (a 16' Glaspar Avalon hull powered by a 100HP Corvair engine) from 1964 thru 1969, Mr. Iaccoca killed the Corvair with his Mustang, as Nader's book did not appear until 1966 and the Corvair was effectively a done deal by then, and Dr. F. Porsche gave the engine design to Ed Cole of GM in the late 1950's and asked him if he wanted to \"play\" with it, so the design had a solid pedigree to begin with.
