Powered by a 283 and - check this out - a manual three speed on the column ! Yes, three on the tree. John took her through the gears as we got on the freeway and it ran good, tranny whirring as a GM manual did back them but no engine noise even at idle. We got to the show so early that they let us in for free ... these are great cars and the 327 is an iconic motor. Plenty of life left in this rig. It really was a dog, but it was my dog. I had a friend who owned a junk yard, so I dropped it off and a week later I had a 3 speed on the column. It was a little faster, but not so easy to shift. A Hurst floor shifter took care of that, and it was actually a fun car. I was in no position to put in the 327 that i wanted, working full time and still in High School. As for the Powerglide, you gotta admit that a 2 speed behind those 327's, 350's, and even the 409 my Dad bought with his 60 Flattop, leave a lot to be desired. Bought it in '72 in Bozeman, MT. My mother still tells stories about pushing it in the snow, many months pregnant with my older brother. \r\n\r\nUnfortunately, I only heard it run once in the late '80s. Forwhatever reason, it was parked in the early '80s (move from leaded to unleaded gas?), and never saw the road again. Dad brought it with us every time we moved, though, thinking he'd get around to restoring it. Fast forward to 2010, a landscaper asked my Dad what he had under the tarp and ended up making an offer. Dad thoughtfully reached out to my brother and I to make sure we were OK with it. Hopefully it's now living a more active life than I ever saw it.\r\n\r\nAll this to say, the '64 Impala SS has a special place in my heart. And yes, all the hip-hop references were especially amusing to me in the era as a result.
