The 4.0L engine has been extremely reliable, never once not started or run well. The transmission and the 4x4, not so much. The manual trans would be the ticket on these for reliability. The seats are amazingly comfortable for hours on end. Sucks gas though, 13mpg on a good day. The biggest problem on mine, from spending its life in northern salt country, mucho rust on the bottom even despite regular washing, which has probably numbered its days. It's so hard to find clean examples any more, most either rusted away or sun-baked to oblivion. \r\n\r\nThis one would make a nice replacement, except as a pure matter of personal preference, I just can't warm up to the Limited styling. Maybe it would grow on me. I had a '92 Ranger ext cab 4x4 I bought new with the 4.0 and 5-speed. The juice clutch is why I got rid of it after 21 years and 90k miles - that and the Salt Belt winters literally ate it from the inside out. You can't bleed that setup without removing the clutch & bell housing (as the clutch cylinder is inside the bell housing). Major league PITA. Otherwise that 4.0 was bullet-proof, but I went through at least three sets of auto lockout hubs for the push-button x-fer case. My brother-in-law had a '91 Exploder with the same drivetrain and same issues. My folks also factory special ordered a '93 Exploder XLT with an automatic but manual transfer case and lockout hubs (for a $46 credit!), to tow behind their motorhome. It never saw road salt, so they got 200K+ miles out of driving it or about 300k on the spindles, as my dad would say, due to an electric odometer decoupler when it was towed (and yes that's legal). The 4.0L and the automatic ran flawless as long as they had it. The best preventative maintenance seems to be using de-scaler before coolant swaps, and staying on top of the flushes. They also tend to leak from the valve cover gasket, because Ford decided that the sealing surface would be split between the head and the intake manifold, so there's this lovely impossible-to-seal gap between the two. Finding a 1st gen 91-94 in excellent condition is now nearly impossible. I've had a lot of these Explorers over the years and still work on them regularly. I still own my 94 Explorer Sport 2 door that I purchased new.\r\nThe 1st gen Explorer is one of the best and under-rated 4wd platforms. They are easy to lift, add larger tires, lockers, etc. The 8.8 axle is one of the strongest light duty axles produced, and it's no secret that they often find their way under Jeeps. The Dana 35 TTB front end is also very capable and can be upgraded with Warn manual hubs, lockers, extended radius arms, etc. \r\nThe main issue that plagued 1st gen Explorers is the A4LD transmission. However, I figured out how to build a stout A4LD transmission over 20 years ago. The last one went over 250k before being traded on a GMC Terrain with more infotainment features. They were all bulletproof. Something the next generation Explorers could never claim.
