I was fortunate in that my parents and their parents were avid motorcyclists and raised me and my brother around anything 2 wheels our entire lives. Needless to say motorcycles and motorcycling are in my DNA!\r\nAfter a life of racing and going fast off road, I needed a way to still enjoy my passion but in a bit more safer manner. In 2004 I purchased my first vintage motorcycle a 1970 Triumph T120 Bonneville. After riding it for several years, it became tired and I decided to take it completely apart and restore it. And so it began\u2026\r\nMy next vintage purchase was a 1969 BMW R60/2. I got it running and then proceeded to complete a concourse level restoration to it. I still own and regularly ride this motorcycle. I was hooked at this point and began restoring 1-2 BMW\u2019s each year to compete at the Quail Motorcycle Event each May in Carmel, California. I grew to love the BMW community and the many friends I have made along the way. \r\nIn 2019 I met and competed against Mark Francois at the Quail and we became good friends. We both shared our OCD attention to detail and the passion for our mark and model(s). Mark the R90S and me the /2 and /5 models. As I learned more about the R90S and its importance to BMW and motorcycling in the mid 1970\u2019s, I decided I had to have one. One thing led to another and I asked Mark if he would build me one. After much learning (on my part) and many conversations with Mark this R90S was the final product. \r\nIt is an amazing example and possibly one of the best out there IMHO. \r\nIt has been awarded with wins everywhere it has been shown, and it so rewarding to share and be appreciated by those who love motorcycles. I know this model holds such a special place in so many peoples hearts as I have heard the many stories of memories shared. \r\nPersonally I restore 1-2 BMW\u2019s each year, /2\u2019s and /5\u2019s, and after spending 300-400hrs of my time in the process have not been able to part with any of them. They are like my children \ud83d\ude0a. After almost 20 years of restoring these beautiful motorcycles I am running out of room! @originalbob this is why I am selling this one today \ud83d\ude09 This will be the first of my vintage motorcycles that I have sold\u2026and it is tuff!\r\nThis one is very special not only for all of the awards it\u2019s won, but for the magnificent cover shot and article in the current November/December Motorcycle Classics magazine. I completed and delivered this R90S to Ken back in 2022. Since then, I have completed and delivered two additional R90Ss, one here on BaT and one privately for a collector, and I have begun what will be my 2025 restoration R90S. I do one per year, and I truly love doing the work to bring these glorious machines back to life.\u00a0\r\nAs with all my restorations, I focus on the little details to make a restoration as close to factory original as possible.\u00a0@mundog82, you are correct with your two observations. The left side Hella combination switch with the small thumb wing on the headlight toggle is a 1977 feature. When I got involved in R90S restoration, that was all that was available, and now even these 77 switches are difficult to come by. In all the time restoring, I have only come across one correct 1975/1976 Hella left side switch that\u00a0does not have this wing and unfortunately, I was too slow in buying it.\u00a0The correct left side cockpit sticker next to the volt meter was not available at the time I completed the restoration and is still NLA according to BMW. Since then, other suppliers are reproducing the correct sticker.\r\nI want to comment on Ken's cold start, which I believe is related to his use of high octane racing fuel. I am not a fuel expert, but the higher the octane, the lower the flash point\u00a0and the more the fuel will resist detonation. My DellOrto tuning work is done with pump 91, which will ignite more easily than 103 octane racing fuel. This is why Ken needed to babysit the throttle on the cold start. I have no doubt that the R90S will run extremely strong using this fuel however. All of them have the old finish stripped off the fuel tank and seat cowl by media blast, and the rest of the parts get chemically/hand stripped. Given these are basically 50 year old machines, most of them require at least some minor dent repair on the tank and corrections to the composite parts. However, this one was exceptionally straight with minimal repairs needed. It is always rewarding to see Marks finished product at the end with his amazing attention to detail in every possible respect.
