Upshifts are \"lift and shift\", the faster the better. I will leave Mr. Hewland's helpful words explain multiple ways to downshift quickly with no drama. Doing it well can be done with two fingers, up or down.\r\n\r\nThat said, most race engines tend to run poorly a low rpm and the power tends to come on at higher RPM. So, to utilize the narrow power band of the engine, the gears are selected for the track with a 1300 to 1500 RPM drop for each gearchange. The ratios chosen are close to one another so the driver can keep the engine in the desired power band/rpm range. A Conventry Climax engine of this vintage usually makes its best power between 5000 and 7500 RPM depending on tuning.\r\n\r\nI depress the clutch partway when downshifting to ease the engagement of the dogs. I am also guessing that it was due to the CFC's efforts that Formula Ford is in the Monterey Reunion this year? Which, I wanted to say, is very cool. It's not ok that FF has been treated like a second-class citizen in parts of the vintage racing world, including being frozen out of the Historics/Reunion almost entirely throughout the event's history. When I first learned of the CFC a few years ago, I was so impressed by the high level of restoration and preparation of the cars and thought to myself at the time, that if anyone can transition the FF class into a deserving spot in some of the \"prestige\" race events, it would be this group. And then spectators would really enjoy the always-nail-biting close racing and beautiful simplicity and jewel-like, purity-of-purpose cars. (Not there's anything wrong or \"non-prestigious\" with CSRG, by the way!) \r\n\r\nI raced in the FF \"Series\" down south, and while there were many, many very well-prepped cars involved and was a positive catalyst in resuscitating a class that had (for several years prior) devolved to an 8-car race nobody really cared about, the cars themselves in this new group were never as important as the competition (which was fierce and very well-played). But this focus on competition resulted in fewer and fewer vintage FF's each season, with a steady shift toward the faster CF's and then, after the first DB-1 showed up, it seemed that, within a year, the whole field was DB-1's! So, competition privatized over \"vintage\". (Still a great race group to watch though.) But being someone who was in vintage racing in order to see vintage cars, and ideally a variety of vintage cars, I very much appreciated when Cross Flow Cup sprung to life with its focus on the cars. \r\n\r\nFormula Ford is such a historically significant race class; where almost every one of 70's-80's crop of F1 and Prototype superstars \u2013 especially the drivers who didn't come from money \u2013 began their careers (engineers, designers, technicians, too).
