I owned an '88 model new, purchased at a nice discount. When I bought it, I had already been riding motorcycles for twenty years. My initial riding impression was it felt like a muscle car with a big V-8. Very impressive straight-line acceleration! \r\n\r\nI bought it at the Yamaha dealership in the small town where I grew up. A friend of mine owned the shop, and I stopped in over Christmas vacation. He offered me any street bike in the showroom at his dealer cost. His shop sold predominately off-road motorcycles, and he had a hard time moving big street bikes. I believe MSRP for the '88 model was $5,995. I wasn't in the market for a new street bike, but after a quick look, I told him I liked the Vmax best. \r\n\r\nHe loaned me a helmet so I could go for a test ride. I liked it immediately, it was different than anything I had ridden before. I'd read a test ride article on the initial '85 model, and I liked the fact that Yamaha had taken the V4 engine from their Venture touring machine and built a hot rod \"dragster\". \r\n\r\nHe told me $4,800 out-the-door, but I procrastinated until February before I went back with cash in hand. He was out that day, and his business partner let me ride it away for $4,500! LOL! \r\n\r\nI rode it for ten years, but the fun didn't last. On my way to work one morning it broke a rod with 18K miles on the clock. The engine was a total loss, it even broke the cases. Even though I'd maintained it well, I'd also ridden it hard, perfecting my smoky burnout launch from countless traffic lights. In the 10+ years I rode it, not a single car ever beat it off a traffic light. Few even came close. I had a highway roll-on contest with a Corvette one day from 60-100+ MPH, the Yamaha left the Vette for dead. When I slowed down and he caught up, he gave me a thumbs-up. Some guys just like a good street race. \r\n\r\nI finally did get clobbered one summer however! My normal routine was to get the bike serviced in March or April every year, and have the shop install a new back tire at the same time. I never got more than 2,000 miles out of a rear Dunlop, some went up in smoke much quicker. By August, I took it back to the Yamaha shop for its second back tire in less than six months. My wife said, \"I thought you got a new tire last April?\" I didn't think she'd been paying attention! My first was a '90 with 89k miles when I got it from the original owner, all on the factory engine/trans, when I was a grunt tech at 16 years old high school at the local Yamaha/Honda/Polaris/Ski-Doo dealer in my Farmville town in Montana. I ended up selling it with just over 120k on it, all trouble free except I did have to replace the rear diff. My favorite was my '92 with a PCW 1327 cc stroker with Keihin flatslides/custom cams/ported heads that made 183 hp on the dyno, and I owned that one from 20-26 years old, running 9.7 in the quarter at 3800 ft elevation without a wheelie bar. Surprised quite a few of the new Hayabusas, R1s, ZX-10s at the time, and the new V-rod was just an appetizer with that thing. NOTHING is like a V-max, and when you ride one, you get stopped everywhere you go with people telling stories about their lives and experiences with them. They are the King of Musclebikes, and an absolute blast to ride. With some solid engine mounts, a fork brace, some frame braces, and a good set of radial tires, they'll actually handle quite well, and you'll get rid of the dreaded \"death wobble\" the early bikes with the smaller diameter forks were known for. The aftermarket support for these is second only to the H-Ds and 'Busas. Don't be afraid of them if you have never owned one, the throttle works both ways, but once you get used to them, you'll be in the V-boost. All. The. Time..... Good luck with the auction, seller. Promotional material at the time said with a professional test rider the bike would go from 0-100-0 in 13 seconds. It had VBoost that opened butterfly valves about 5500 rpm's. I used to hit the freeway on ramp where I live, in a kind of horseshoe pattern. I'd be in 3rd gear at 45 mph and it took 2.2 seconds to hit 75. People would be going by me and then 2 seconds later I would blow by them like they weren't moving. Bought one in 85, first year. I put 15k miles one summer. It was accepted by the harley crowd so you could take it anywhere. Always left it stock. I buried the speedometer then went another 2 grand on the tach. went through 2nd gear more than once but the motor never had a bit of problem. I even brought it to the strip a couple times. It would run in the 10's between 119 and 121mph. Had over 60k miles on it when I sold it in 2004. Wish I still had it.
