I knew right then and there, that this was the most beautiful car I had ever seen and that I really liked pretty girls in dresses!\r\n\r\nIt was many years later that I finally learned what that car was and they have been my favorite ever since! Part of the reason, I really love these Lancia's is their universal appeal and instant acceptance at all the best events worldwide. There are just a handful of vehicles that fall into this category but all but the Lancia are mass produced machines. Think of cars like Porsches 356 Coupe and Speedsters and a 300SL Gullwing. They are eligible for everything but because they are so common, it is very hard to get one of them accepted.\r\n\r\nIf you enter a Lancia Spider America in the MM, Targa Florio, Tour de France / Tour Auto, Le Mans Classic and anything else you can think of, they will roll the red carpet out for you.\r\n\r\nNot only will they let you get into any event you want, they are absolutely perfect and brilliant driving machines with no equal. Lancia's motivation painting the car the exact same shade of dark burgundy / red as the Scuderia Lancia Team Cars. This is also why he had it fitted the original D-50 Formula One steering wheel form the family's museum collection.\r\n\r\nSig. Lancia tried to make a deal to buy the car back earlier this year but could never reach an agreement with the owner.\r\n\r\nMaybe he will chime in and possibly even bid as the car's reserve is well back of market prices and the car here to sell and make a new owner very, very happy.\r\n\r\nWith regards to the wheels, the car can easily be converted back and forth form Borrani wire wheels or back to the Cabo Borrani steel wheels. There are five of each. There is also a really nice tool and wrench set up to torque the wire wheels down.\r\n\r\nThis Lancia offers the next fortunate caretaker the best of both worlds and a choice anytime he or she wishes to switch back and forth. Everybody who got one should pray everyday and bring a sacrifice to the car lords.\n\nThe other day, when the Cabriolet was up for auction, I said that with the Cab, you get virtually 80 - 90% of the same experience for a fraction of the price. That's true. But the Spider is simply stunning. And once I find that cool $1M to drop on a car, this is in the top three choices (The other ones being a TZ1 and a 6C 1750 Zagato). \n\nI completely agree with @Ed_L. Put this back to Verde Alassio, by far the best color for this car. And put back the steel wheels as well. Both current choices - colors and wheels - do not do any favor to the sensational design at all. It appears that it was not done for any significant purpose or impact to the car (No racing purpose no nothing) except personal preference. Besides, it was the 80s again. In my opinion, the car deserves better and boy, would it shine even more. Nevertheless, a stunning automobile and one of the best auctions we've had here ever. If the lucky future owner wants to correct the above incorrect items I have the real mirror new repro and a newly restored jack and repro side windows bag (not bags mind you). One of the most inspired post-War shapes produced in series. The definition of Trans-Atlantic style. Look at the side profile: the highest point in steel is the hood scoop. The whole design lunges forward, but casually and elegantly. The Spider is a relaxed athlete about to run. The body is taught but smooth with all the filled-in compound curves.\r\n\r\n(2) So fantastic to drive. The car competes, performance-wise, but excluding raw power, with sporting cars decades newer. The combination of balance, brakes, excellent steering, and torque make the Spider a dream to drive. Recall that a B20 placed second at the MM a in 1951, behind a Lampredi-engined, fire-breathing Ferrari with more than 100% more hp. That's a tribute to the over-the-road performance of the platform. This B24S is the developed, uprated, and SWB version of that platform.\r\n\r\n(3) Eventing. I had my car on the CO1000 in 2018, and the Spider climbs hills all day in second gear. It'll cruise at an honest 100mph. You arrive briskly, but relaxed and refreshed. There is plenty of room inside for real people. My friend @mbaum stated on the Aurelia Convertible auction last week, \"looks great, goes great, makes you looks great - what could be better?\" He is so on-point (as usual) - even more so with a Spider!\r\n\r\n(4) Engineering. De Virgilio almost single-handedly engineered the V6 in the Aurelia, defining the automotive landscape for the subsequent 60 years. Everything in the car is engineered that way, down to the trick clockwork hood and boot supports. There is not a single piece of the Spider that is on the car by chance.\r\n\r\n(5) Passion. The period of 1950-1955, including the production of the Spider, along with the legendary Sports Racing cars and Grand Prix program, was the culmination of Gianni Lancia's grandiose dream to compete at the top levels of motorsport and capture the apex of the European and American post-War sports car market. He failed, one can say, since the Pesenti family assumed control of the company in 1955. However, Gianni actually achieved the dream: he uncompromisingly produced Lancia road cars, with the Aurelia, specifically the Spider America topping the range. His racing cars won outright the Mille Miglia in 1954, Targa Florio 1952-1954, and Carrera Panamericana in 1953, and his Grand Prix cars won the Drivers' Championship in 1956, rebadged as Ferraris. I used to see the car poking out of his garage from time to time and then for ten years or so heard nothing.\r\n\r\nI drove by the house one day a few years ago and there was a moving truck and I stoped to speak to some younger gentleman in front of the house. The owner, their grandfather had passed away and they had inherited everything. I asked about the old race car and they said it was the first thing they sold. They were quite pleased that after listing it on Craigs List, it sold in just a day. I won't even tell you what they got for it but safe to say, a fraction by a large margin of its real value.\r\n\r\nThe next car I am listing on BAT is a similar treasure that went missing 57 years ago after its last raced in the 1963 Tour de France. Collectors and enthusiasts have been searching for the car for years and years, chasing rumors and mostly ghost stories. No issue, nice ones will easily start at $10M.\r\n\r\nThe other main advantage of the Lancia Spider America over its Ferrari counterpart is multi-event eligibility.\r\n\r\nThe Ferrari will be welcome at any concours you can think of and a few tours and rallies here and there.\r\n\r\nThe Lancia however is both eligible and an immediate acceptance at the Mille Miglia, Tour Auto, Le Mans Classic, Targa Florio Retrospective and any other concours, race or rally you can think of and you can do all that with one car for less than $1M in most cases.\r\n\r\nThere is good reason these Lancias are so popular with collectors, they just check off every box on a list of what a collector might want out of a vehicle. So you have to literally cut the prodrudin part of the studs and than ,,voila' ,la wire wheel will seat as it should.\r\nNow if you want to reinstall the steel wheels you will revers the problem, in fact the steel wheel will need longer studs , and that is when you will need to replace all the studs ,and that is done by removing the drums ,yes all four of them. I know of no other vehicle that allows you, with one machine, to do everything.\r\n\r\nNot only are they the perfect vehicle to enter any event, they also perform, brake and handle better than just about anything you can think of. In the real-world of today, they are absolutely, insanely user friendly and I would not hesitate jumping in one and driving cross-country, in a rally, race or tour in a heartbeat if given the opportunity. \r\n\r\nThey are equally comfortable just making a grocery run as they literally have no vices. The only drawback for some is the simple fact that they have no door handles or locks other than a hidden, remote trunk lock and locking gas cap.\r\n\r\nIn my experience, I have driven them everywhere and never had anyone attempt to do any harm and in fact, they generate more wonderful conversations and approval than just about any other car I have ever had come and go through my hands.\r\n\r\nThe heart of these vehicles success is the incredible engineering that Lancia was famous for.
