These cars when they are getting older can certainly rust all over. The thing is you can pretty well say that about any car of this era. The point I was making is that there are definite weak spots in certain car that you can go to first to get a feel. Citroen DSs; floor between the rear wheels, Rover SD1s; the double skinned wheel arches, Ford Consul Mk2; rear spring hangers etc etc, I won't bore you with everything I've tinkered with over the years.\r\nThe front strut mounts on these are particularly vulnerable, I had my daily driver Mk1 repaired 3 times, I lived somewhere damp! As you say headlight bowls and bottom of front wings can also rust through but strut failure could be catastrophic on the road.\r\nThey're not the be all & end all but simply a good place to start. This is definitely a US-spec wagon. The sticker on the air plenum was unique to cars sent to the US. It has spark plug gap info, etc. Usually these are long gone. US-spec cars all had the hazard switch you can see on the parcel tray, down at the driver's left (pic #29). Wagon is also fitted with a GT motor. Headers, Weber downdraft, bigger valve head. Little bit more hp. I'm not sure if the wagon was ever offered in GT form in the UK? \r\n\r\nAlso looks to have the remote shift GT transmission- not stock to the US wagons- and a GT center console. Tighter shifting than the normal super stirrer. In my opinion, these are all good/great things!!! \r\n\r\nThere's a tremendous hope that the Mk1 Owner's Club( https://mk1cortina.club/ ) is going to reproduce the rear window rubbers. The English Fords were less expensive than any US Ford; when in 1970 they introduced the Maverick at a starting price of \u201c$1995! $1995!\u201d the English cars were quietly made to disappear. Which is too bad- not least because my grandma traded in the \u201868 Cortina for a new Maverick. So I never got to drive the Cortina, and I did inherit the truly awful Mav as a college student in \u201875. Oh well!
