I have a 1960 TR3A, and have done quite a few mods to make it a spirited driver; 7/8\" front sway bar, adjustable rear racing level arm shocks. 6 1/2 Panasport wheels with lug nuts wrapped with 205/60R15 Goodrich Tires (yes they fit), along with a big bore kit and 9lb alloy flywheel among other engine mods, and an OD transmission.\r\n\r\nSo this puppy is pretty dam quick, and handles very well - no lean at all. My son and I participle in some of the 1000 mile 3 day rallies in Northern California, mainly the Motherlode Rally, and when zooming around fun twisty roads in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the stock seats flexed like crazy and virtually spill the occupants out of the seats. No laterally rigidity. So as a passenger we needed to have an arm outside the door to hold us in place especially on RH turns so we weren't falling into the driver. For the driver, it meant really clenching onto the banjo steering wheel to keep our upper body in place, but then the stock steering wheel would flex too.\r\n\r\nSo I installed Miata seats and a Moto-Lita steering wheel, and OMG, it transformed the driving experience 10-fold. I agree the stock seats were fairly comfortable, but Miata seats are more comfortable and offer so much more support for long drives to auto-cross. And the Moto-Lita steering wheel with virtually zero flex is also a huge upgrade.\r\n\r\nSo it comes down to how you want to drive the car. Came with o/d on 4th. gear only. I installed the following modifications:\r\n- replaced the standard muffle with Triumph sport muffler which made a huge change in the exhaust note. Sounded terrific.\r\n- removed the radiator fan, installed a radiator blind which could be adjusted from the cockpit.\r\n- replaced front and rear shocks with competition units. \r\nI replaced one exhaust valve during my three year ownership.\r\nI worked as a young graduate engineer at this time in the North of Scotland where bad weather is the default. It was driven in all seasons without a hitch. Before I sold it I took a four week long trip from the U.K. through France, Belgium, Germany Austria and back to England. The solenoid, mounted remotely from the starter on RHS firewall has a remote button to turn over the engine. A great asset for tuneups. Fuel pump has a priming lever on the bottom of the pump. I always prime the pump after a weeks sitting. Much easier on the starter as the motor starts right up rather than waiting for fuel to feed after having sat. And of course if really OEM with OEM rad then you have the option of crank starting, just like a Model T. If properly set up, with stock components, the differential shouldn't leak. I suspect that the pinion seal is leaking; might also be the rear cover plate, but I mainly suspect the pinion. It's not hard to replace, but the seal tends to wear the pinion over time, and then replacing the seal won't stop the leak. You can a special sleeve to fix even that, though.
